a4 brake problems

Hi, i changed the discs and pads on my girlfriends a4 1.8tq sport yesterday and everything seemed fine but... Today when i drove the car they seemed a bit soft but if you released the pedal and put it straight back on again the pedal was a lot firmer, is this normal and i'm being paranoid? thanks in advance.
