VW Polo speedo problem

Mygirlfriends polo's speedo has stopped working what could it be?
Its a 1995 1.0 beast.

are they cable driven?

Did the needle start acting irratically before?
sort of wobbling about at constant speed?

If so its probably a broken cable.

OR

there is a small gear in the gearbox attached to the diff carier.
If this fibre gear comes loose it will not go round with the diff and will not turn the cable.

Not sure mate shes only just bought the car,

shes ays it would do the above for a while,then go to zero and work again but it doesnt work at all now,and the petrol gauge doesnt even work.

also the fuel gauge has stopped working

not sure if they are cable or electric.

Is there a speedo cable going to the diff area of the gearbox?

shes gone away for the weekend so when she gets back i will have a look.
Sounds elctric though doesnt it if the fuel gauge has stopped working,unless thats a seperate problem

yeah its electric as it has the digital mileage
