2006 Audi A6 2.0 Tdi S-line - manual or auto ?..............
Discussion
Not an A6 but I changed my 2.0 Tdi A4 Avant S-Line manual for the petrol/auto version a month ago and I'm very happy with it.
I live in London so the auto is a very welcome change, the tiptronic system is very good, loads better than Porsche's system IMO. It really just depends on what you want from the car, I switched to auto for a number of reasons - 1. lots of driving on the M25 and other London roads, 2. wife kept stalling the Tdi on busy junctions (I stalled it quite a few times as well, it cuts out very easily at low revs), 3. I'm lazy. On a sports car I'd always go with the manual but for a family car that sits in traffic a lot I'd always go with auto now.
I think you lose around .5 of a second off the 0-60 time with Audi's auto box, however in real world driving you actually gain time as you can just stamp on the pedal at the lights - and in sports mode they go bloody well.
So, in my opinion go for the auto.

I would go for the auto as well, it's a big saloon and I feel autos suit big, non-sporty saloons. All the manual 4 cylinder diesel vws and audis I've driven have quite short gearing and a bit of lag whereas the cvt autobox tends to hide that pretty well and make for a relaxed cruise most of the time, with full power if you need it.
I have worked at an Audi dealer for nearly 2 years, The only gearbox we have any trouble with is the Multitronic,(and we have a lot of trouble with it) that is the auto fitted to the 2.0dti you intend to buy. I wouldn't have one if you paid me, do yourself a favour and save me some work, get the manual.
I will happily go into all the problems with it if you want but it may get a bit boring.

Agree completely, I had one car which always had problems with stalling or nearly stalling when coming to rest, and another which had a terrible judder when pulling away which I had to reject and get my money back.I was therefore 'forced' to buy a 2.7T Quattro A6 to get a normal tip auto instead of cvt.
I would only consder buying a multitronic again if it came with an Audi warranty, I assumed (perhaps incorrectly) that the OP was considering a new purchase. It is a great gearbox after all.
