S5 - Is It Buyable Or Is It Really Oversold
Discussion
I dissagree.
I've driven the A5 3.0TDi quattro, and the S5, and, like the B6 / B7 S4 it is a great car.
Even though I sell Audi cars and have a company car I own an S4 Avant B6, and it is the best car I have owned, in fact I rate it higher than the 993 Porsche I used to have.
I think you must realise that some people want performance but don't want to advertise it, they want to be subtle unlike for example an M3 / RS4.
However I do agree the RS4 and, if they build it the RS5 will LOOK much more aggressive.
If you ordered through me this week, you'll have either a 3.0TDi or a S5 in September.
I have a LHD 3.0TDi in the showroom now to view.
However, once the launch event has been (14th/15th July) then the likely situation is that lead times will be lengthened.
Hope this helps!

Thanks Dry - your not in Chester are you ? the LHD was in there recently
No - Lol!Carlisle.
It was in Chester I believe, and I don't know who had it last week, but they buggered it!!
They've tried to jump start it or something, and we've had to repair the ECU after they fried it or something!

I was referring to new purchases. I have a B6 S4 too and its great but the dynamics of what people buy now and four years ago when the B6 S4 came out are different - car tax is now very dislocated, people are much more interested in economy and Audi is claiming very strong performance for the 3.0tdi. I predict that very few S5's will be sold. That doesn't mean that its a bad car - people just buy with a different set of value judgements these days. Shame really as the noise from blipping an S4's throttle is great.I've driven the A5 3.0TDi quattro, and the S5, and, like the B6 / B7 S4 it is a great car.

Yes I get your point.
Agreed - economy is on people's mind, but it always has been.
That's why the Audi range has sold best in TDi form, across the A3, A4, A6, A8 and now Q7 range for the last 10 years (exception being A8 where diesel came out for the UK market in 2003).
Road tax is lower on the smaller diesels admittedly, but on the A5 3.0TDi it is the same rate as a B6 S4 and B7 S4 and also S5.
So given that fact, and the fact that a small percentage of Audi cars sold will be the high performance petrol models, bear in mind that the B5 S4, B5 RS4, B6 S4, etc. all also sold in limited numbers compared to the "cooking" models of the range.
Audi quotes 39mpg combined for a manual 3.0TDi A5. It will be interesting to see what it does return for the average A5 driver where performance is important, and where an S5 will likely return 20mpg. I suspect nearer 29 - 30 mpg in practice.
Essentially all I'm saying is that both the A5 and S5 are great cars, and neither should be dismissed.
If what you're driving at is that high mileage drivers will plump for the A5, and low mileage drivers will be more keen to at least consider the S5, then I would also agree.
However people are already raving over the S5 as the replacement (and not before time) of the S2 coupe version that we've not had since 1996.
As many people should buy the S5 as who currently place orders for the BMW 335i Coupe IMO.

How does the Tdi compare to the S5? On paper the difference is marginal and obscure. I've driven the A5 3.0TDi quattro, and the S5, and, like the B6 / B7 S4 it is a great car.
Well I would liken the experience to driving an A4 3.0TDi quattro versus and S4.
One (3.0TDi) is a powerful, flexible, comfortable, anonymous looking car with good all weather handling, and the other (S4) is all those things and more, feeling sharp, and responsive in a way that reminds you what turbo lag there still is on the TDi, and the noise of a V8 is still way more satisfying than the muted exhaust note of the TDi.
Off the mark the S5 is right up there with the best I would say.
Overtaking power in the TDi is prodigious, but becomes asthmatic where the V8 keeps breathing.
A lot of this is academic as you can't LEGALLY exploit the upper echelons of either car's performance on the UK roads.
But we all know we will.
I'd rather have the S5 unless I did massive mileage or paid company car tax!

Thanks for that. How is the Tdi handling, with the Sport Suspension Pack? Similar to the S5?
Brilliant.I have to admit I've not driven the non-sport suspension model.
The 3.0TDi Sport feels taught, poised, unflappable, and I can't see anyone not going for the Sport pack myself, unless they want the kind of "comfort" cruiser that older people buy in a Mercedes-Benz CLK. Seats are better in Sport too.
The only part that lets donw the A/ S5 for me is the internal dynamics considering its platform size. Considering the A5 uses the the newer multifunctional platform seen on the c6 A6 and soon to be B8 A4, there is suprisingly little room in the rear of the cabin, indeed rear leg space is less than in a B6 A/S4.
It would also appear to be a car that suits particular colours, preferably silver of dark. Light colours do not hide its bulk well.
If I weren't rue to Audi because of their ergonomics and build quality I'd order a 335i or 335d coupe, far more svelte shape if still a little confused and the twin turbo 3.0 BMW petrol and diesels are far better engines in economy and performance.
Audi are good at big diesels in the 4.2V8TDi and 6.0V12 soon to be relased, but they are being eclipsed by BMW on the mid range ones.

Yeah the 335d motor is some piece of work.It would also appear to be a car that suits particular colours, preferably silver of dark. Light colours do not hide its bulk well.

I think it can only be a matter of time before Audi produce a competitor, and then looks out BMW.
Incidentally the Q7 with the 4.2TDi is currently the world's most powerful SUV with diesel power, and the 6.0TDi will be the diesel to end all diesels. Don't fancy the economy mind you.
Regarding the space inside, remember this is only a coupe. Not a family 5 seater.
The important feature of the technology that the A5 premiers, is the LONGITUDENAL MULTI-PURPOSE PLATFORM, which will be seen in another form in the forthcoming B8 A4 also along with new products yet to be shown to both us and the public.
The A6 does not share this platform.
However, the whole point is that the version of the platform to be used in the A4 will indeed have more legroom and width in the rear, addressing your complaint.
The B8 A4 was shown to my boss along with others including an A3 Cabriolet and the TTS version of the TT, the RS6 Avant, the Q5 and more in Majorca during May.
To quote him "Once people see the new A4 they simply will not buy anything else like a 3 series, and as for the Q5, the BMW X3 will just die!"
Sounds good to me!!
SORRY EDITED TO SAY "MAY" NOT "MARCH" WHICH WAS TYPED EARLIER WHILE MY BRAIN WAS ON ITS TEA BREAK.

People will buy the 3.0tdi or wait for the RS5. The S5 is a dead horse, along with the S4 for the last two years. The B8 S4 will be too.
Absolute ToshYou can get an S5 withouth a huge delay right now, just like the new TT before it was on the roads. As soon as it hits showrooms and roads the orders will start coming in, just like the TT
