Audi A5? 3.0tdi vs S5, the performance-difference seems tiny
Discussion
anyone had any experience driving one yet? I picked up the brochure today and they look pretty nice and the diesel does o-62 in 5.9 and returns 39.2mpg whereas the S5 does 0-62 in 5.1 , yet amazingly only does 22.8mpg!, both are quattro and both do 155mph yet the S5 will cost you twice the money in petrol..
the 3.0tdi looks like a good buy, has anyone driven one yet?

Chip the S5 and it will still be quicker than the chipped A5 3.0TDi.
They suit different purposes and that is why they are both sold. The 'S' suspension is also set up differently, even to an A5 with S-Line suspension or Sports Pack (not sure what it is to be labelled as.
It also depends on whether you want linear or forced induction acceleration. Having had both linear for me anytime.

Hi.
Yes, have driven both.

Plenty of data there.

drybeer, i know this is pistonheads etc, but i dont see whats the difference between as5 and the diesel as its only a fraction of a second slower to 60mph and both share the same quattro drivetrain yet the diesel does twice the performance. i am going to test drive it on friday
any idea of residuals in 3 years time?

Well the S5 has different suspension, steeringn ratio, seats, wheels and tyres all contributing to the difference.any idea of residuals in 3 years time?
Also the 4.2 petrol V8 in the S5 is uprated with FSi over the 4.2 in the S4.
Hence why the handling and response are majorly different.
The 3.0TDi is related only to the one from the A4 3.0TDi, 240ps vs 233 in A4 - doesn't seem a lot but the new engine is amazing to drive and hence why it is a lot higher performance.
Resale value - I think we all know that the 3.0TDi will be better here.
Similarly a BMW 335d will have better resale than a 335i.
Hope that helps.
