Golf mk2 insurance issues!
Discussion
Hi there,
Im looking to buy a golf mk2 of some sort, the more powerful the better, but there seem to be so many different versions/trims etc and the insurance companies keep giving me massive quotes, big prob as im only 19 and have pretty much no £££.Can ne1 tell me what mk2 golfs there are of a paticular trim/engine size that is the cheapest to insure?
cheers,jez

Hi there,
I am also 19 and have had a 1.6 driver which i think would be a good option if you havent got that much doe. Decent engine with a bit of power, also they look near enough the same as the gti 8v minus 1 or 2 things. My insurance for one of those was aroung £1000, but i have only got 1 years no claims and did have a claim 2 years ago so if you are clean you would be loking at around £700-£800 as i think i may have been overcharged aswell.
I have now got a golf mk2 gti 8v big bumper model which is in my opinoin one of the best in the range. Plenty of power and even more torque! Looks great and has the sports interior. Very reliable car so i have been told. Its not too bad on insurance either. This costs me at the moment just shy of £1400 which is not bad given my circumstances, but if you shop around i'm sure you wouldnt be paying much more than £1000.
Hope this helps

I'm afraid the best way is to buy a non GTI and build up your no clims for a few years. Buy a 1.6 or 1.8 carb, they are 90bhp and go quite well. The later ones have PAS and the GL model will have rev counter, sunroof etc.. The Driver might be in a higher group, you will have to check this.
I know its not what you want to hear but we've all been through it.
