Have myself an Audi Avant 1.9 Diesel 100k on the clock all the stuff and has been
excellent (i bought it last year) No problems, with it until tonight, just rolling
up at home, bout 200yds from my pad and I lost transmission.
It's a 6 Speed tiptronic gear box, has been smooth, oil put in as it should and
when it should, isn't due for another oil change for another 20,000 miles.
No errors on the dash, managed to coast onto my drive and there it is at the moment.
There are no gears whatsoever, if i go into the manual tiptronic mode the 123456 on
the dash are all lit up in a block where as before it would the gear that you were
in at the time and move up up down a number as you changed through the gears.
In the auto mode the PRND are there but after about 20 seconds they all start to flash
at once which if i've read correctly is in limp mode ? There were no noises in
the gearbox, no rattling from the enging and no lights on the dash. It does it's
diagnostic when i switch the ignition on and it tells me my next service is due in
around 4000 miles. Car starts, ticks over but no gears whatsoever. I can actually
move it a little ibt if i push it forward/back but im only a gurlie and we're not
supposed to know these things/do these things and so on.
Car is a 2003 September model, 130bhp version. Has been fully maintained and is in
excellent condtion and has full service history.
Any ideas? I'll be speaking to Audi tomorrow and getting them to take it in but i'd
like an idea as to whats wrong before they take it away, you never know what they
might try telling me.

I managed to dig this post out of the archives here, one assumes this is still relevant
to my car http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...
Is there a particular sequence the lights flash that tells you the faults?

These are the error codes that a little IPAQ device gave out with something called Delphi
attached to it.
Errors
18149 Clutch Pressure adaption , Adaption limit obtained.
17114 Incorrect Gear Ratio
18151 Clutch Slip Monitoring, Signal too high.
17106 Output Speed Sensor, No signal.
he reset it all as in cleared the errors and he restarted the car
and all those errors returned with one extra
18201 Sensor 2 Gearbox revolution No signal.

Multiple failure codes with no prior warning or nasty noises would make me suspect a dodgy multiplug connector somewhere - maybe some water has got in?
Could be a pain to track down though - I'd start by having a good look at all the wiring for chafing, damaged boots etc and then disconnecting, checking and reconnecting all the plugs in the gearbox area, turning the ignition on after each to see whether it had made a difference.
If you want to narrow it down first, find out where the sensors that are reporting fault codes are and start with the plugs closest to them.

Well I've had the sensors at the front cleaned and there is no difference.
When speaking to an alleged audi gearbox specialist and reading him out the codes
he said that the first one '18149 Clutch Pressure adaption , Adaption limit obtaine'
he said that it was the one that told him the pulley had snapped inside the gearbox.
The car is still on my drive, when the man that sorted the sensors came round he
started the car, revved it to about 3rpm and it moved back very slighty in reverse
and likewise it went into drive and moved forward a few inches. Would a broken
pulley still allow some movement? Also, when it does move forward there is no
judder but a sound like a wheel going round in the mud. As if something is
slipping.
One other thing is that there is a very faint tapping sound now, it sounds like its
coming from the bottom of the engine by the geabox, a slight and I mean slight
jangling sound.

I believe you've had a chronic Multitronic transmission failure.
We've seen a few of these on high mileage A4 and A6 with the Multi (CVT) transmission.
Effectively, I believe from the symptoms you've described, the metal "pulley" or drivebelt of metal chain link has failed.
Either that or a cone has sheared.
I'm sorry to say it, but I don't believe it's an electrical problem, but a mechanical one, and it will cost at least £1000 to fix.
Definately get your Audi dealer to look.
It may seem expensive per hour labour rate, but effectively they'll be able to cut out the hours of diagnosis that may be essential elsewhere, and give you a lower bill at the end of the day.
Good luck.
