A3 sportback 2.0 TDI - Euro 5?
Discussion
Hi Everyone,
I'm looking to order a new company car when i start a new job in 3 months time, and top of my list at the minute is the A3 diesel sportback. I used to have the 3 door A3 with the 2.0 TDI 140 bhp engine, so i'm thinking that i might try and stretch it to the 170bhp with the DPF.
My questions are, if anyone cn help?
- if anyone has the 170bhp A3, how do you findd it? More laggy than the 140 bhp engine?
- what mpg are you getting, i used to easily get 50 mpg from the old 140 bhp A3
- does anyone know if the 170 DPF is Euro 5 compliant? I read the other day that the government are likely to waive the 3% extra company car tax on diesels, for Euro 5 compliant cars, so that may save me a bit of cash if thats the case.
I'll just add that i haven't been to test drive them yet as i haven't had time, and i know how the 140 bhp A3 performs
Any help appreciated,
Paul

Hi.
Not more laggy in the application for the A3, but it is a bit more "peaky" power delivery than the 140.
Economy is down from the 140 - just how much you could try to compare on a test drive between your own car and the 170 on the same route...
Not Euro V I'm afraid, but still very low emissions considering the performance.

Don't know the story on Euro 5 VaG diesels yet, but if my A4 TDI 140 is anything to go by the Euro 5 diesels will suffer on fuel consumption as the Euro 4 diesels have over the Euro 3 diesels. My TDI 140 is a lot thirstier than my old TDI 130 was.
Hi.Well bear in mind the 140 has more power and torque than the 130.
I regularly get the same ecenomy as I got from my 130 cars in the newer 140...
The 170 is way worse, but that's due to the higeer boost and different injection from the V6 TDis.
Euro 5...
Rumour is that during 2008 we'll see engines rolling out.
Given the difference it will actually make in pounds and pence to your company car tax, I woudn't bother waiting.
It's a bit like not buying a newer TV or PC as shortly something better might some out.
We'd never buy anything!

Can't help on an A3 - but the 170 engine in the A4 is (according to book) as eonomical as the 140.
Sadly this is a fallacy. The 140 manual driven with no cruise will give you 45 - 50mpg for a normal mixed bag of driving, and 50+ if driven like Miss. Daisy always at 60mph on A roads, and 70mph on M-ways, and always ginger on the throttle.
The 170 in the brochure I agree seems to be similar, but in the real world it is 5mpg lower than the 140, and if you drive it hard it can be as low as 30mpg!
My 170 quattro is able to give 45 if I'm really careful, but normal driving gives me 37 - 38 mpg.
I have a 140PD A4 Sline saloon.
The car is chipped and i have had it dyno'd today at 191BHP, so it goes well.
In terms of economy i get about 40-45MPG, with heavy boots on, 50MPG on a run easily.
I recently had a 170pd A3 Sportback with DSG while mine had a service, absolutly loved it and went very well, and averaged about 42MPG.
