VW Mk1 Gti engine conversion
Discussion
Hi Guys,
I've got a '80 golf gti 1.6 - had it since about Jan this year and after much deliberation over what to do with it im seriously looking to do an engine conversion. I know a local car dealer who put a 2L engine in one and I can remember him telling me it was a relatively simple swap (I think it was an audi engine around 200bhp but not 100% sure), does anyone know of the best swap available and what sort of engine I should be looking for, budget would be around £2-3k.
Any help much appreciated
Cheers
Bob

If you're doing all the work and any fabrication yourself I suppose you could squeak an Audi 20VT into that budget, but that's possibly going to be overkill for a MK1.
If it was me with that budget I'd go to town on a 2.0 16V ABF motor of of a MK3 Golf GTI or Seat Ibiza Cupra 16v. You should find a decent secondhand engine for less than £500.
You've got a choice of running it on K-Jetronic from a MK2 Golf 16v or Digi II EFI from the donor car if you want to use factory bits but you'll see more power and better torque on aftermarket management.
Dependant on wheel size you should look at moving to Corrado/Golf Rallye 280mm front discs with a 22mm master cylinder at the same time.
What do you want to use the car for when it's done?

i'm just planning on doing it up as a project really - its a strange thing, i've bought and sold a few cars I really liked over the last couple of years and although its been hard to part with them i've still done it, however I just can't let the golf go and fancy smartening her up a bit.
Once the work is done its just going to be a weekend type of car. What bhp is the mk3 2.0 engine?
Regards
Bob

The 2L 16V ABF engine found in the Mk3 Golf and Seat Ibiza is 150bhp standard. One of the main problems with putting the ABF into a Mk1 is that it is a taller block and there are some clearance issues - the main one is the exhaust manifol, these can be sorted out though.Once the work is done its just going to be a weekend type of car. You could 20vT it yourself for £2 - £3k easily.
Other options would be 1.8 16v from the Mk2, or a G60 engine from a Mk2.

2.0 16v engine from an Audi coupe.
You will have to swap some bits about as it lives north south in the coupe, but life's a challenge.
Another option, but its a bit lazier than the ABF and 1.8 16v from the Mk2, this can be sorted out by swapping the inlet cam for the 1.8 16v one, livens the engine up a bit more. You will have to swap some bits about as it lives north south in the coupe, but life's a challenge.
There's plenty of build projects detailed on the various club sites www.clubgti.co.uk or www.edition38.com
The G60 route seems very popular as it uses the 1.8 block and is tunable to well over 200bhp.
Other alternative is the 1.8T which is widely available and probably easier to source than the G60 engine.

The G60 uses a 1.8 block but its quite different from the 8v Gti one.The G60 route seems very popular as it uses the 1.8 block and is tunable to well over 200bhp.

You can convert the 8v and indeed the 16v to run a G60 but the kit is expensive, its available from a company called Bahn Brenner.

I thought it was the 8v engine with a supercharger bolted on.
Just realised it was made for homologation, is this why its a different block and probably stronger?
G60 can be a lot of fun and sounds quite amusing, but it's an old tech solution these days and the charger is a bit of a weak spot if used in anger. Nice place to visit but you wouldn't want to live there.
The MK1 handles really, really well when it's set up properly and I think the revvy nature of the 2.0 16v blocks (when used with correct cams) suits it nicely. VW quoted the MK3 ABF 16v motor at 150 BHP but the limiting factor in this was the Digi 2 injection system, it's pretty poor.
Cams, head and mappable ECU can see you over 190 BHP from an ABF with a good helping of torque.

Can it fit in the MKI easily or does it need major fettlin'?

There are quite a few Mk1 G60s about, so its definetly doable. Id imagine the main headache is the wiring as the G60 uses the late Mk2 loom - Im not really that up to speed on G's into Mk1s.I thought it was the 8v engine with a supercharger bolted on.

Yep, G60 block is stronger than the normal 8v.
