My wifes Bora TDI is getting a right slating for being gutless. Ok, it's only the 90bhp one, but its an economical car, ideal for transporting her and our little one around.
So I drove it and its ok for general driving around town etc., but get it on a motorway and try to pull out at 70mph and overtake something and its got nothing. My foot was flat on the floor, revs somewhere around 3500rpm. In my opinion at those revs, the turbo should be doing something and it should be pulling at least a bit.
My dads got the equivalent Golf at it pulls really well at most speeds, and the Bora can't be that much heavier.
Could it be something wrong with the turbo?

1 change the fuel filter. Fuel starvation will kill it dead.
2 if it is a turbo check the arm on the turbo is actually connected to the waist gate.
I forget which car it was on but the R clip used to rust and fall out allowing the waist gate rod to drop off of the arm and therefore, while everything operates OK the waist gate stays in the open position and you gat no boost.

However if it is an SDI and not a TDI they are as flat as a witch's T*Ts anyway.

SDI stands for

S low
D angerous
I nadiquate

I know I had on as a company car once.

Thanks for the replies.
I've checked the wastegate arm and it seems fine.
Is there a simple way of checking the Air Flow meter?

To check the Air mass meter your going to need vag-com and to check the actual versus specified values.

A very good FAQ here - http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=148753

you could disconnect the air mass meter and drive the car, if it feels no different then it points to the meter being faulty.

would be inconclusive as if its something else disconnecting wont illiminate anything and when disconnected it will store a fault code in the memory of duff afm. personally for the cost I would replace it anyway, make sure you get the correct one from the engine code as they all look the same but it needs the correct one to function correctly . 9/10 in my experience thats what it will be.

Thanks for your help guys.
I disconnected the sensor and what a huge difference. Got a new one today , will fit tommorow, hopefully that'll sort it.

Airflow meter likely culprity.

Outside chance it's the EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve.

Well that didn't work!!!
Fitted the new MAF sensor and it improves the mid range power, but seems to have caused other problems.
It now idles very roughly when cold, is very hesitant up to about 1800rpm and then surges forward dumping smoke.
I've got no choice but to ask my mechanic to connect it to the computer.
It's so frustrating not being able to diagnose things on modern cars without the right computer and software.

got a laptop?

Cables can be had for a few quid of fleabay and you can get a shareware version of vag-com for free, allows you to read the codes..

When you fitted the MAF did you disconnect the batterty for a period of time (> 20 mins).
Puts the car into ecu into 'learn' mode.
Also, your new MAF could be faulty.

From experience I would suggest buying the replacement MAF from VW. Twice I've used ones from other sources and they were duffers.
