Why has the Polo morphed into a swimming pool?

Just had a call from my mum who says she gone out to her Polo (2002) which hasn't been out for a week and it's got about 4 inches of water in the footwells. Before you ask, yes I did ask her and no the windows weren't open. Has anyone got any ideas why it has done this?
Has it been serviced recently / since the last heavy rain ?Often the pollen filer isn't fitted correctly and lets water in.
Our old A6 used to get soggy footwells, this was because there wasa drain that got clogged up with leaves and over-flowed and entered the car through the pollen filter (i think), the drain was right next to it, just below the windscreen, perhaps your Mothers' Polo is suffering the same problem.
