I’m looking at a Q7 (second generation type 4M, straight diesel, not a hybrid, petrol, or SQ7) to replace my BMW 520d and I’d like to know what real world MPG people are getting from theirs.

For my daily, I do drive economically (gentle acceleration, coasting before braking, not hooning it up the motorway). I live out in the sticks, so stop/start city driving rarely features. My 520d is giving me high 40s in everyday driving, nudging to 50 on a long run.

Thanks in advance!

Well…you said not SQ7 but mine is 38mpg long term average over its 8 year life so far. The 3l diesels are a couple of mpg better I believe, so you might get 40.

Thats bloody good considering the performance. Has it been reliable?

Yes, 100% so far.

The 4l V8 in the SQ7 (and Cayenne, and Bentayga) is widely regarded as the finest diesel that will ever be put into a car, and I can see why. Perfect blend of performance and economy for this size of car.

Interesting, i've been looking at Macan's but the SQ7 prices seem to be dropping and possibly becoming an option.

I am also liking this. A lot:

Hello. I have a late 2015 4M 3.0tdi with the 268hp engine. Just crept over 100k miles. Lots of European trips, mainly to the Alps. 4up, dog, roof box etc does 33-34mpg for a long trip at c.140kmh cruise. Without roof box more like 37-38mpg, but we are always at a fast cruise. If you were gentle, no doubt well into the 40s.

SQ7 is very attractive and economy seems not to be too much worse, but insurance and consumables (21 inch tyres for example) markedly different. For family duty, 3 litre diesel, 19 inch wheels, works very well, and I don’t worry about the car being stolen, parking on the street, dog hairs, parking dings etc etc. It’s a family workhorse, albeit a fast and comfortable one. SQ7 clearly much more special, but I’d save that money to spend on proper toys.

I'd agree with the comments above; either side of 40 depending on use. Good deal less around town.

SQ7s sold well and prices seem to compare well with the 3l versions , not that much of a premium on a 6yo car like the one you linked. Autotrader tells me SQ7s from 2017 with 50k miles have a listed retail price of around £36k.

Possibly this is because the SQ7 really only gave you the bigger engine compared with the 3l versions. To get the “full” SQ7 experience that the reviews did at launch, you needed to spec the “dynamics pack” which gave you the 48V adaptive suspension, e-diff and 4WS. Because this cost £6500 a lot of people (in fact most people, looking at SQ7s for sale) didn’t spec it.

We have a 2018 diesel, not the SQ7. Average real world over the past few years will be about 33mpg but it’s probably 70:30 split town vs motorway driving. We get about 37mpg on motorway at 75mph.

Thanks for the replies all. So perhaps with careful driving high 30's to 40 should be fairly easily achievable.
