Mrs' H's Mk7.5 GTi needs new front dampers - as appears to be pretty standard, they're leaking notably already (<60k miles).

Options from the indy we use are OE or Monroe's at <1/2 the part price. Looks like Monroe also manufacture the OE dampers if what I'm reading is correct, so...

- Is anyone aware of any performance or quality ( rolleyes <60k miles ) difference between them, or is the price difference just for an OE label and the privilege of the part going through the VW logistics system?

- Are there any aftermarket alternatives that don't cost the earth but are fully compatible with DCC? Preferably without butchering the ride - this is a daily/family car.

I don't normally consider pattern parts, but in this instance I'm really not sure OE is worth the extra...

To my knowledge the only (other) alternatives are massive overkill - something like KW DDC.

There are Chinesium specials on ebay. I tried one for a TTS out of curiosity (and because it was dirt cheap). Didn't work, dead on arrival. Feedback on these online is hugely variable. I suspect they're cheap for a reason.

Monroe are definitely the manufacturer, do you have a good independent in your area?

Give them a call and ask for their feedback, it won't be the first time someone has ask them this question

Cant see them being any different personally, VW tax will apply here.
Have a look at Autodoc for rough prices.

They didn't really offer an opinion, just said Monroe were the aftermarket alternative at <50% of the VW price.

Didn't think about that...problem is Mrs H needs the car every day for the school run (and pretty much refuses to drive my Civic, even though it's just a Civic).

Buy the Monroe stuff. Remember that VW make very little themselves. The clutch and flywheel are made by Sachs and stuck in a box with a VW sticker on. Sachs also sell them to trade as a Sachs part. The 'generic' equivalent even turns up with the VW part number on more often than not.

Stick what you need in your basket on the Autodoc app (not website) and wait for offer to pop up. Usually Monday for some reason and ~38% generally the biggest discount you'll see. On top of this google for codes as there's always something floating around for at least another 2% off.
