Just been inspecting my leaking sump and discovered I had two sump bolts just clinging on with stripped threads in the block. I’ve just bought some 7/16 UNC helicoils with correct drill and tap but before I start drilling out the stripped threads I’d appreciate any comments from you folks about potential pitfalls. I’m assuming when drilling out I’m well away from any oil/water galleries down there and no chance of breaking into anything vital.

Have you tried some slightly longer bolts, there may just be some / enough useable thread further down?

Failling that if you do have to drill and tap for Helocoils you're only going to be drilling as deep as the original bolts so shouldn't be any risk of breaking through into an oilway or whatever?

idea
What about getting some studs/threaded rod instead of bolts?
These could be coated with studlock/bearing fit and screwed in till they bottom hopefully into some good thread.
Some peeps fit a couple of studs anyway to aid with locating the sump.

cool

This would be my preferred option. The studs make it much easier to locate sump and the nuts are only nipped up enough to get a good seal.
This way you can do away with gasket, using some silicone based sealant using Phazed idea where you add your mastic, locate sump but not tightened up to much, let it go off a bit then nip it up. Saves sealant squeezing out and into sump causing oil pick up issues for some in the past and more than likely to create a seal that lasts.

Doh...never thought about the thread lock/stud option. Sounds like a much easier fix and better solution.
I love this forum. Thanks guys.

I did this on my Chimaera, put some studs in. I presume the threads will be the same, which are 5/16" UNC.

Not ALL the holes are blind so it depends where you put them as to how far they need to be screwed in.

Helicoiling is a doddle once you've got the knack of it, the hard part is getting the knack. If you're still tempted to have a go get a test piece of ally to practice on and wait till you're good at it before you try the real thing.

The hardest part for me would be getting enough height so you can be sure the drill is square.
