Changing the engine mounts - help!!

I've been trying to change the passenger side engine mount, as the old one was knackered. I thought it looked relatively easy.

The car is up on axle stands, the wheels are off and the engine is on a jack to take the weight.

After a lot of cursing and swearing and dismantling of most of the rest of the car (exhaust etc) I got the old one off in two pieces.

But no amount of swearing (and I tried a lot of it) is helping me get the new one on. It won't fit in the available gap, so I can't get the studs into the engine bracket.

Any tips or tricks would be most welcome, please, before I really lose it and break something.

Loosen bolts on opposite mount and jack engine up until plenum top hits wiper mesh, that should give you some wiggle room. Replace both or you’ll be back there again in no time.

And they are a pain in the arse as well!

Just to add, if your car is secure enough on axle stands and you can source a good bit of 2X2 inch stout timber or similar, you can use this as a lever in between the sump and the chassis to get you a few more millimetres movement.

They really are a pain due to the design.

I managed it in the end, by loosening the opposite side enough to raise the engine up some more. I also had to 'trim' the new mount studs a few mm to get them in.

But we're up and running again.
