Hi all,

Took my 500 out for a drive last weekend and the temperature gauge never rose beyond zero (even though the engine was certainly warn and the fans cut in).

Probably a daft question, but is there anything to check short of changing out the sensor or, if necessary, the gauge (both beyond my competence)?

Thank you!

Changing the gauge will be a dash out job, which is quite fiddly, although not technically difficult.

Take the wire off the sender and see what the gauge reads without the wire touching anything. Then short the wire to earth and see what the gauge reads. If you have a zero temperature reading with the wire in one position and full scale deflection with the wire in the other position, your problem is most likely the sender. This is relatively easy to change. It screws out and you can screw a replacement straight in.

Thank you. I'll give the loose wire thing a try!

Could be an air slug in the sender extension. Very common issue for TVR coolant senders. I would advise all owners to carryout the Rover sender mod. Very easy job resulting in fast responsive readings

My Chim did the same... faulty sensor ...Agree fit the "new type" sensor in place of the original unused Rover sensor … See this thread

You should have a resistor in the wire just back from the sensor, I did a bit of tidying up a while back, it got disturbed and broke, I guess with age and heat.

So if there’s no difference between connecting and disconnecting the sensor try by passing the resistor first and see if the gauge come to life.

Cheers,
