The way I do it is to pre-fill the new filter with oil, get under the car, spin the old one off then spin the new one on. I think you'll have to go some for it to totally drian out as i managed to drop the new filter in the oil pan redface pick it out and clean it down before putting it on properly. I then drain the oil out the sump and refill. I have never had a problem with the oil pump draining and needing repriming.

Also gone this route, though "should" change it a little more often as a result.

Have left filter off altogether for a couple of mins without needing to prime - I have a serpentine engine though and seem to recall reading somewhere that these later engines are fitted with a self-priming pump [not 100% sure on this].

yes Trochoidal pumps (serp) don't need priming plus they are driven and crankshaft speeds rather than camshaft driven 1/2 speed, the Serp design is fitted to pretty much everything currently on our roads unlike the pre-serp gear style pumps wink however they do the job they are just old hat scratchchin personally never had pump draining issues with the RV8 early gear style pump when fitted to Land Rovers etc but I do has Russel MC describes wink
