Remove and refit piston
Discussion
The internal parts of my engine is going to be balanced whilst the crank is out. To get this done properly pistons need to be removed from conrods, in order to find the right bobweights. This is what a couple of different engine builders tell me.
There's always a risk of destorting a piston while pressing the gudgeon pin out, since they are shrink fitted, my experience tell me. Sometimes a LOT of tons needed from a proper press tool. The pin comes loose with a big BANG. OK when you're putting new pistons in, but when reusing...?
But now I read that the RV8 has "semi-floating" gudgeon pins. In the Land Rover 4.0/4.6 overhaul manual a simple vice is used, and no heating when fitting.
Any experience of this? What is a semi-floating pin anyway?
