Griff owners in London, new polution charges?
Discussion
Hi all, just wondering how London based Griff owners will be affected by the new pollution charges, I know it mainly affects diesel cars but they are going to bring in regs that apply to older petrol vehicles with higher emissions.
I have a friend in London and I visit her sometimes, I'm worried Griff's won't meet these new emission regulations?
And if you own an older petrol vehicle or a TVR of any kind and live in Central London theoretically you could be charged £24 a day to drive it!

Noticed this on the new posts section, there is a ULEZ checker online - I looked at a for sale ads section on here and picked a 1994 TVR and popped it into the checker and it says you are subject to the charge. Will depend on car though.
Its Euro 6 for diesel cars and Euro 4 for petrol. Typically petrol cars made after 2005 will be Euro 4 compliant.

Thanks for the info, just checked my Griff, it"s subject to the charge...Its Euro 6 for diesel cars and Euro 4 for petrol. Typically petrol cars made after 2005 will be Euro 4 compliant.

And the ULEZ rolls out to the north and south circular in 2 years time.
To be honest wouldn't be surprised if something similar is implemented in most major cities at some point. It pushes the governments desire for the populous to buy EVs and also adds in a lovely cash flow to the bargain.

So what if I live in Westminster? Do I have to pay the charge everyday?
I don't want to get political, it's not the place here, but IMO the horse bolted a long time ago regarding pollution and the future of this planet, all I can see being rolled out are blatant money making exercises, and the desire to "be seen to be doing something" on the part of the legislators.
There is no such thing as pollution free energy or transport, electric cars just displace the pollution somewhere else. It's like scrapping older polluting vehicles, making new ones creates even more pollution and forces lower income people to buy new cars, or, it stops them from owning their own transport.
Rant over.

Yes in Westminster you will need to pay each day congestion charge plus the ULEZ charge.
I can see the point to a degree, you remove pollution from built up areas and move it to less built up areas to reduce disease caused by said pollution. But the implementation is poor, like you say telling everyone to buy diesel to reduce our CO2 footprint only to ten years later heavily penalize same people. Lets be completely clear, the government will be equally taxing EVs once they are common place, they have to recover the funds from somewhere once everyone stops buying petrol/diesel and paying pollution taxes. Lets not mention said same government is choosing to fly an extra 700 aircraft a day over the same ULEZ zone by expanding Heathrow, but lets not mention that as it makes them lots of money...
But yes ULEZ is the death of modern classic cars in and around London unfortunately.

We'd all like to improve the planet regarding pollution, and yes, aviation is a big polluter, along with shipping they criss cross the globe thousands of times a day, it's very rare that you here avaiation mentioned in environmental debates, classic cars on the other hand barely register on the meter in comparison, but motorists on the whole are easy targets, and, as you say, avaiation is big money.I can see the point to a degree, you remove pollution from built up areas and move it to less built up areas to reduce disease caused by said pollution. The ULEZ was also going to badly affect commuters on older motorcycles, as any pre 2007 bike, those not tested to be Euro 3 compliance, were to be charged £12.50 a day.
Many older motorcycles never had their NOx recorded at manufacture, as bikes have always lagged behind the tighter requirements of cars, including MOT emmisions testing. Many would have sailed through the testing and would have been exempt the charges, so their owners felt hard done by.
Fortunately a company have set up a new TfL-approved emissions testing centre to test older bikes. If a bike passes the test, the results are uploaded straight to the TfL database resulting in an exemption.
Are these old Griffs too dirty to pass?, or could they be tested now and added to the exemption list?

There was a spike in people buying 40 year old cars in London apparently, they are exempt the congestion charge, 7 seater land rovers for example. But it only applied on weekdays during congestion, obvs. But the ULEZ is 24 hrs a day, every day.
They've already mis-reported on the radio news I heard, by stating the general ages of cars as if most drivers don't know what Euro 4 (petrol) or Euro 6 (diesel) is. Now I come to think of it...….

If you live there, you've a long grace period:
"The discount will be available to those who live within the ULEZ and in designated areas next to the boundary where the Congestion Charge residents' discount applies. The grace period will apply from 8 April 2019 to 24 October 2021"
