Just wanted to know if the heat shield can be replaced without removing the exhaust manifolds, which I think is a major undertaking.

No.
They are both glued and riveted in place.
Nice job with the engine out...even better with the body off....pain in the butt otherwise.

What adhesive would you use for that? A small piece of mine needs gluing back down.

My heatshield came with a two-part epoxy adhesive although I didn't use it. I've just riveted them on.

Thanks. I’ve got some two part glue in the garage so that’s perfect.

I use a contact adhesive used in the marine industry.
From the evidence left when removing the old ones it is clear the factory also used a contact adhesive.

I'd doubt it was any thing fancy, same stuff they stuck the carpets in with?

I sat on a small stool in the engine bay, (obviously with the engine and gearbox out) and that made it nice and easy.

The material is both glued and riveted so to remove properly you would normally drill out the rivets. This will not be possible so you would need to grind the rivets off with a Dremel or die grinder. You would then only be able to glue the material on which will work but probably not last as long. Having said that the heat matt material on the underside of the bonnet is only glued on and that lasts a good number of years.

With the manifolds off can you not rivet a new sheet in there, or is there not the room? What about laying a new mat over the top of the old one?

Understood, thanks. Good point about the under bonnet material being glued. Maybe worth a try then .......
