Hi All,
My 98 Griff had its first MOT failure, due to the dust covers staring to perish - can't complain!
I tried the search, as I'm sure that this will have been discussed many times previously - but couldn't find anything relevant.
Are these well known parts and readily available please?
Has anyone had a go at replacing them - and if so, could you recommend an appropriate ball joint splitter?
thanks in advance.

Buy silicone versions (measure the size) EVEN if you replaced the joint you would need to replace the new ones with silicone versions. A@

I'd replace the complete ball joints, reputable brand like Lemforder should have decent quality rubber bits.

i know this post is a few weeks old.

I had same problem, rubber seals were perished. Because there was no play, It was an Advisory on MOT, but they would let water in and debris and eventually fail MOT.

I purchased new ones, they are from a Saab 900 top or bottom ball joints. only about £20 a pair.

Main problem is removing the old ones. you have to break apart the top ball joint from the hub. you cannot use a normal scissor joint breaker as it wont fit into the hub. I tried to use a wedge type with a 2pound hammer but they wouldn't move. I then tried with a sledgehammer and broke the cast wedge. A mate of mine had a solid steel wedge breaker and after a few swings of a sledgehammer they came apart. I hit it so hard the car moved on the axle stands.

This is what 30yrs of joints not being removed causes. Good Luck with removing yours.

Alex.

All you need is a big hammer and whack it where the red star is. Yellow star for track rod end wink

Thanks all,
In the end I was a wuss - and took it to Topcats, where Warren dutifully replaced the ball joints and covers, and then put it through the MOT.
Great service - and a lovely collection of toys to admire, whilst you're there.
Need to dream up some more 'essential' work, so that I can go back.
cheers
