Hi,

I'm considering buying a 2000/01 diesel P38, it would be my daily drive.
Have any of you got any advice of what to look out for?
or can point me in the direction of a buyers guide.

Cheers

I bought one back in April 16. 2000 P38 2.5 DSE. I love it and the 'lifestyle' thing that comes with a Land Rover product. I couldn't have afforded a decent 'classic' in the current market and figured that a P38 well looked after, can only increase in value.

landyzone and rangerovers.net have a good support network for owners. Well worth having a look.

On the plus side is the fabulously imperious driving position, sumptuous interior and the air suspension which is well worth keeping in good order. Downside is that the 2.5 BMW engine works VERY hard in the P38 so performance is pretty dire. But that's missing the point..... A winding A road through countryside, with a good rack of CDs will put a smile on your face and you will forgive it anything.

Mine is now chipped, which helps a lot and by spring I will have fitted an electric fan instead of the mechanical one, which makes them quieter and releases a few much needed bhp!

I get about 28mpg which I'm happy with because I do much lower mileages these days.

Rust doesn't seem as bad in P38 as the classic so there's still time to get a good one and keep it so.
Bottom of the tailgate, the seem viewed from inside, is a weak spot.

Electrics can be a pain, the gadgets side of thing mainly. Nothing that will stop you getting home though. I have never met a P38 owner who can truthfully say that ALL the gadgets are working!

I was lucky enough to find an indy specialist who tolerates the idea of doing only the difficult stuff for me!

There does seem to be some very nice ones for sale so you can afford to be fussy.

I now have green wellies, was given a shooting stick for Christmas so now I'm looking for a good secondhand Barbour.

Agree with everything said by 52classic, apart from we got a v8 P38 part way through 2016 - and love it to bits......even the bits that keep playing up. They are a pleasure to drive and you are never in a hurry to get there as the seats and driving position are wonderful.
