Discovery 2 Tdi ECU problems

I have had my Disco since 2005 when it was 2. It has been looked after by the main dealer for seven of those years
It has had several electric problems. In 2014 oil leaked into the ECUand damaged the loom which i had replaced along with ECU.
on Feb 1st (2 1/2 years later nearly) it died again. without going into all details ECu specialists in Derby finally declared it had to be
replaced. Landrover are going to take a £100 off the new one in recognition of the shambolicness of it all. So £588 not £688.
There are three garages involved but I am interested in the fact that the ECU only lasted such a short time. Shocking. My car is great
otherwise. I tow horses regularly and it is a work horse but what if it went on a motorway.
Have other people had the same experience? Is this going to happen again. Pretty fed up.
