RRS 3.0 SC Petrol
Discussion
I have been trying to decide between a diesel and petrol engine for my new RRS. The 5.0 petrol is a bit OTT for me so decided it was between the 3.0 petrol or diesel. Due to the anti diesel move I thought the petrol might be a good choice but wanted to test drive both back to back. Managed to find a dealer with a 3.0 petrol to get a test drive. If like me you are thinking about the 3.0 petrol you need to get a test drive. I was not impressed with the petrol at all. You really need to have it buzzing to get any real power delivery and on step down there is nothing there to the extent I think it could get you into trouble if you needed sudden acceleration. It makes an ok sound but it really is all talk no trousers I just don't think the engine is well matched to the gearbox. Just thought I would share that for anyone thinking about the 3.0 petrol as a possible option, don't buy without trying.
Completely agree - I walked in to buy the 3.0 petrol and for the exact same reasons - walked out with a 3.0 diesel autobiography instead, the petrol feels buzzy and incongruous and the diesel torquey and just right.
Interestingly spec for spec on an HSE Dynamic the GFV for finance purposes is £8k higher on the diesel too...

Is this the same engine that's going into the new D5? I'll be disappointed if it's a poor combination as I'd really like to move away from diesels for the next car. The SDV6 in the D4 is great and pulls brilliantly but it's still a rattly, noisy diesel. I know people say diesels have come a long way but they're still nowhere near as smooth as a nice petrol and you can still feel the vibrations at idle even in a diesel S-class Merc!
