Velar engine options - Petrol or Diesel?
Discussion
Hi all,
test drove a Velar and RRS today and have decided to go for a Velar, but have a quandary regarding engine.
Needs to be gutsy, so the D300 (300PS, 700Nm) and P300 (300PS, 500Nm) are the two options (P380 is outside my budget).
The numbers say that the D300 is the one, much more torque and presumably lower down as well, so good for shifting the mass of the Velar.
But the 0-60 figure is faster for the P300, and it's a new Ingenium 4cyl engine, whereas the D300 is an older V6.
I'm inclined towards the petrol because a) it's a newer engine with better 0-60 and b) I like petrol engines.
Thoughts?

I can't help with your decision about Diesel V Petrol. Last year we bought a Diesel Macan S and we love the car but feel with hindsight the wait for the petrol would have been worth it as the Porsche 3.0 petrol is probably a more refined engine than the Porsche 3.0 Diesel.
What decided you in favour of the Velar over the RRS? I haven't seen one in the flesh but I am interested in your views.

A few things:
It feels more car like - the position is lower than the RRS. I like this, as I prefer a car to an SUV, but my wife loves the SUV driving position. The Velar position is high enough for her but low enough for me to prefer it to the RRS.
It feels special, particularly in the back. My daughter definitely preferred it. The RRS felt particularly ordinary to me, and although this new model is only a couple of years old, it did feel a bit dated. I'm sure an interior facelift with velar-style twin screens is coming soon (in fact the salesman told me it was, probably in March).
It looks a lot nicer than the RRS imo. The exterior design looks great in the flesh. I've always been a fan of the RRS but having driven them both back to back, the Velar wins the looks war hands down imo.
It's a bit smaller, only a bit, but it feels smaller to drive, and I found easier to position in tight roads, of which there a few around where I live.
Overall, it just excited me, in a way that the RRS didn't. The RRS felt very familiar (I currently have an X3, previously a Cayenne and X5) which I liked initially, but the familiarity quickly turned from comforting to boring. My wife felt the RRS was an old man's car (her dad drives one
)
One final small detail which really wound me up was the little armrests in the RRS. They are horrible, they get in the way, I can't see the point in them and you can't delete them. That had a disproportionately negative effect on me

Velar is definitely the way to go over the RRS . I had a RRS loan car and it had hard ride and was far from silent . Sounds like you have already made up your mind on petrol and with the UK being anti diesel despite euro 6 being so clean it will go very well and providing you are not going to tour Europe where diesel is far cheaper it will be good . Personally I would only sign up for a 2 year PCP as Plug-in is bound to be out within that time scale . Velar has a fabulous interior and can be had with a opening roof . If you are factory ordering ( as you will be if you are going for petrol ) then the silvers and grey or white suit it well . Black makes it look like a RRS ! ENJOY !
