Considering a 2007-09 L322 4.2 S/C - Any worse than a P38
Discussion
Hallo,
I’m currently running an 01’ 4.6 Vogue which has been perfect for the five months I’ve owned it but I’m slightly bored of it. I’m thinking of adding an 07-09 Supercharged L332 to my garage because I still haven’t shaken the RR bug.
Everyone always said “P38s are a money pit” but actually owning one I disagree with that statement. My question is : do L332s really deserve such a bad reputation or are people just talking out of their a*ses?

I've never owned a P38 and really cannot comment on their reliability, but I'm on my second L322 and have owned my 4.2 SC for nearly 5 years.
I adore mine and would highly recommend you try / buy one.
As for reliability, I fear commenting on my own could tempt fate, but they're generally considered more reliable than the earlier BMW-engined variants and largely less troublesome than the TDV8 models.
They're afflicted by some common issues, such as sticking rear brake calipers and the fuel tank pump / senders failing, and have their own idiosyncrasies such as the supercharger coolant pump being incorrectly wired, but these would have been resolved by now on most of them.
Having them serviced by a reputable specialist rather than a main dealer helps with keeping costs down and attention to detail generally higher in many owners' experiences.
Please look on the FFRR forum and do a search on there.

The 4.2 Jag engine is reckoned to be the most reliable RR engine. The major issue is the supercharger coolant pump. Wired wrong from day 1, they run backwards and go tits up at around 70k miles. Cheap fix.
Rear wiper motors made of cheese.
Suspension airbags will go like the P38 but no biggy.
Rust on rear arches.
I had 2 X 4.6 P38's and am currently on a l322 s/c and the s/c is a much better car. Much less wallowy and super quick for a fat old bird. At the end of 2006 they did a facelift, which added heated and cooled seats and a few other aesthetic add ons.
Off to the FFRR site for info overload.

I’ve had 3 L322s and an early RRS, a family member had a P38 in 2003/2004 it was an N reg 4.6 HSE and was nothing but trouble.
On my L322s(2 were 4.4 V8s and one a TD6) I had a xenon headlight fail and it was replaced by a second hand one on eBay, on another I had a coolant pipe and an air suspension compressor, but pretty much trouble free.
The Sport though, that was the car that made me buy a Landcruiser!.
