1968 Series 2a Paint colour identification help please

Evening all,

Picked up this series 2a on Monday. 68 plate 2 and 1/4 petrol.

Paintwork is a bit tatty and I plan to give it a once over with a roller to tidy it up ahead of deciding next steps.

I would like to match the colours of the tailgate/flanks of the car but I am struggling to confirm exactly what colour it is classed as..

I “think” it is deep bronze green but I am not wholly convinced and welcome your views before I fork out cash for tins of the wrong paint.

I’m sure even if you had the correct original colour new in a tin it wouldn’t match any of the existing paint. Personally I’d leave it as it is until you perhaps go for a complete new coat of paint via a spray gun

Probably didn’t explain myself well enough.. been a long day!

I like the (main) colour and would like to roller the whole thing in a coat of whatever it is.

Take a sample (razor blade to remove a flake) to an automotive paint factor who will be able to match and mix.

If you're going to take a sample to a factors for a match then take a decent sized item. Gives them a fighting chance!

Agreed. They are pretty much the go to for Land Rover paint. Decent customer service too. All of my series was done using Paintman coach enamel. It's also well suited to rollering as well.

Shipping is expensive though so try and buy everything you need in one go.

Those wings are marine blue and as you say the rest looks to be consiton green.

Prep is key with painting. I daren't even try to count how many hours I spent painting my series 😕.

Congrats! She looks lovely with that patina. I bought my late 2a/3 crossover this year with the intention of using her occasionally, but I take her out most days now and she is usually the car I choose to take out whenever I’m pottering. She’s such an event and genuinely makes me feel alive and like being a young lad again.

Always find something that I can take apart and give a clean/repair/improve, haven’t had a car that’s made me want to do that in years…

Agree that Paintman at Retford, Notts is the source often recommended at the S2 owners' club. The paint codes are on their web site and I hrear thye are really helpful.

Well she never did get painted................

But after I bought her earlier this year, she has had

A new Weber carb
Manifolds reattached
A stainless steel exhaust
New brakes
A tickle with the welder
New Exmoor Trim heavy-duty hood sticks and hood
A new heater motor
Plugs, leads and coil replaced
Electronic ignition
A good going over with the grease gun
New seats
A cubby box
Most of the oil leaks plugged
Inertia reel seatbelts
Vent screens
12v power socket
new period correct dash switches
Exmoor trim canvas door cards
Period correct door latches
S2 door tops and glass
New underseat tray

And still to fit:
RR difs
New headlamps
New lenses all round
New parabolic springs and long travel dampers
Period correct indicator switch
Battery isolator

And when I have run that for a while, there's a new chassis and bulkhead waiting to be swapped in, over winter 2026, at which point I may well............

..........Paint it.

We need more photos!
If you go to the trouble of replacing chassis and bulkhead you might as well paint it, have it looking really fresh, unless you love the patina, but green body with blue wings is pushing the patina thing a bit.
Plant to buy myself one of these as a retirement present in a few years, a bronze green 88" canvas top is my ideal landrover although if a decent Marine blue one turned up I could live with that.

Well done for getting that far.

My To do list ran for pages and pages and pages and some would argue, it never ends. certainly did several of the items on your list. I know period correct keeps the rivet counters happy, but I gave up and modernized where ever I could. Sound Deadening, 12v outlets, stereo and speakers (Very neat install), carpets, mats, inertia seat belts! I never tracked the amount of hours and cost, but it got daft and in December of last year, I sold it after 11 years. I just couldn't face it any more.

I updated the thread throughout the 10 years I had it and its all here. Might even be some inspiration in there somewhere.

RR diffs will transform it for sure, I did it with my 2a lightweight.

Some advice, fit the rear diff 1st(it's easy) take off front prop and take it for a drive, this is for 2 reasons;
A, see if you like and can live with the new gearing ratio.
B, see if the diff is ok and not noisy.

Very near completion of a galvanised chassis and bulkhead swap now, which also included new springs, shocks, switchgear where necessary, new fixings, a new loom, a refurbished tex magna indicator mechanism, refurbished door hinges, door seals, conversion to H4 headlamps, a new galvanised HD bumper, new galvanised rear body supports, a new diaphragm panel, a skimmed head, new head gasket, new lifters, and............


........a little bit of sympathetic paint.

To answer the original question, it was something like Bronze Green, but not exactly...it was a bit darker. I think the only bit of the exterior that hasn't seen a paint gun is the tailgate, which was put back on just as it was when I bought her, for comparison (except it now sits straight and level(ish)
