Yesterday I was waiting at tick-over in the L405 (TDV8). I turned it off, went into an appointment, and when I came out and restarted it I got the dreaded "restricted performance" message.

However, that vanished, to be replaced with a "check engine" orange light. The car does not have restricted performance.

I have to use the car to shift some stuff tomorrow and the dealership is shut.

So, does anyone want to have a guess what the issue is and am I going to be safe for 150 miles in it tomorrow?

Firstly, have a visual check under the bonnet. My Discovery threw that warning and had restricted performance and it was just an air hose that has popped off - 2 minute fix.

Otherwise, I’d suggest you’ll be fine but might have compromised fuel economy as it could be an O2 sensor.

Thanks. I’ve no choice but to use it tbh.

I've done a visual inspection under the bonnet; nothing seems amiss.

I am not sure if it's a clue, but when I turned off the engine and locked the car there was a low roaring sound from the engine for maybe twenty seconds. I haven't heard it before.

Tells you if so.

No code reader?

No. But it's under warranty, so I can take it in.

It drives fine, I've just done a 120 mile trip without issue, but the exhaust smells a bit at idle. A sensor maybe?

LR Time did a video about this on youtube.
I was sound insulation in the bonnet falling into the air duct in the wing, causing a vacuum in the air filter box, which then cause other issues.

The dealership cannot look at it for a month, so I got the AA out.

It’s suggesting a fuel pressure sensor issue. He has reset it and we will have to see what happens.

Well worth a watch, and a great couple to follow on youtube.

For anyone interested in such things:

This is the AA chap’s report:

Found fault codes P2BAE NOX monitoring stored at122994 km and P0191 fuel rail pressure sensor stored at 123584km. Suspect intermittent fault on fuel sensor. Cleared fault codes, if fault reoccurs take to garage asap. If fault remains off have inspected at booked appointment. Advised OK to drive, if light comes back on with no loss of power.

Worth buying a code reader, something like an Autel AP200.

It’s nearly always a sensor. Most local garages can check and reset if you haven’t got your own kit - you can then have it done (if it recurs) at the dealer.

I’ve had about 3 of these over the last few years, only one needed a fix, which was quick and easy. Mine were under warranty but it’s not much anyway.

Do you have LR warranty with breakdown? If it's recovered to LR they will prioritise your car as they will be on the hook for loan car costs after 48hrs.

LR warranty, no breakdown.

I also just had just the LR warranty for a time, but it quickly became clear that waiting months to be seen for a failure / breakdown wasn't ideal, LR breakdown means you jump the queue. Good luck getting sorted
