They set up a stall selling pancakes in the town centre on a weekday.

They were there for three hours.

The stall was set up for them, so the cost and formalities of the pitch were covered.

Would anyone like to guess the outcome?

I went for £700 profit, but I'm basing that on the fact that they were 16yr olds.

If they were adults setting up as a regular business, complying with all the relevant legislation around food hygiene and everything else, I suspect they would've done well to come away with more than minimum wage, otherwise everyone would be doing it. smile

Was all the money they took profit or were there any overheads, eg ingredients? 'Made' is too vague.

Not enough info to make a guess. But I'll expect to see it in the next series of The Apprentice...!

I voted £700 on turnover but as above, I think you should clarify whether it's 'guess what profit they made' or 'guess how much they turned over'

I'm assuming they were only there for three hours because they were either inundated with customers and ran out of ingredients, which makes me think £1100, or they didn't get any customers and therefore Dad covered the loss. Glass half full I went with the former.

Let's say they sell at a fiver a pop, £1100 would be 220 pancakes, they were only there for 180 minutes...

Town centre on a weekday, I reckon they'd do well to break even, maybe they could pretend they made a profit by ignoring the set up time, or other costs

Depends on the town centre and time of day.

On a week day in the middle of Canterbury in the summer you could still make a killing from all the tourists.

OK, here's what they did:

They sold 100 pancakes, then they went for 200, then 500, then 700, then they all felt tired. The batter mixer's arms ached, the till girl was exhausted and the cook's wrists and forearms ached so they decided to finish the batter that was left and call it a day.

They sold over 700 at £1.50 each.

They made £1100.

I was seriously impressed.

700 pancakes in a few hours? I didn't realise there was a mass starvation going around....

I went for £300 based on serving 30 people an hour and each person buying 2 pancakes on average @ £3/per pancake = £180/per hour x 3 hours = £540. Minus ingredients etc.... £300ish.

How much did their ingredients and equipment, etc. cost?

That's one every 15 seconds for the full three hours, mixed from raw ingredients, prepared, cooked, wrapped and served, money asked for, waiting for customer to get money from pocket and change given.

That's quite an achievement for three people, even if experienced vendors.

Our village shop uses teenagers and I've yet to come across one that can work out change in their head. Should your shopping come to £5.50 and you give them £10.50, be prepared for a long wait and the wrong change. smile

Hats off to them for having a go and getting a great result.

But, OP, can you explain a little more? They actually made 700 crepes in 3 hours or did they have piles premade to reheat, even so that's one every 16 seconds in a pan?

Interested as they're looking at a world record!
