Having to endure listening to myself moaning about how hard it can be to make/hang onto a quid or two in miserable old blighty nearly every day, I seem have forgotten to ask the question, where's better for business?

Do thinks like VAT get charged in the USA?

What about income tax? More straight forward in the USA? Any ideas of the percentages?

VAT is a tax devised for EU countries. However, the idea of having tax on goods and services at point of sale predates VAT. Indeed, Britain had its own Sales/Purchase tax system up until 1973 when it joined the EEC (as was).

In the US taxation is split between nationsal/federal tax and state taxes. State taxes can be collected either as a direct tax on earnings or indirectly on retail sales. Different states chose different options.

I don't think that the US tax system is particularly simple - and, from what I know, a far higher proportion of US taxpayers have to complete tax return forms every year.
