I want to buy a car part from Germany via ebay. The cost of the item is £1400 am I right in thinking I can expect £280 plus a courier handling fee of approx £25? So all in £1700? Ive tried to use the government’s calculator but it’s confusing.

What do you think?

Look up the HS tariff code to see what VAT and import duty applies to that part, then add an admin fee. To be safe add VAT to the import duty amount as well.

((£1400 plus shipping)*1.045 for duty)*1.2 for vat plus any courier customs prosessing fees.

So around £1780.

If the goods are coming from Germany duty is only payable if the goods are not of EU origin or the seller forgets to put that on the invoice.
