Afternoon.

Did a search on Google and there seem to be 1000s of people who are 'Life coaches'. Would prefer to use someone who is recommended. Looking at particular towards career aspects, eg what to do next.

Any recommendations would be great.

thanks

to be honest, why pay for one?

depending on what your looking for - a good friend, or even someone off here could probably help you out with what you need...

yeah - that's why god made pistonheads. You'll get more opinions, more diversity, a lot more toss, and loads of opinions from people who don't know what they're talking about (like me). but it'll be free and will call upon the diverse experince of literally thousands of people.

I don't understand the purpose of a Life Coach.

What do they actually DO?

Do you live in a Teepee?

Life Coaches indeed.

Johnnie Walker and Jack Daniels.

They're life coaches.

They take YOUR watch off. Then they tell you the time. Then they give it back to you.

Utter waste of money. Jusy talk to someone you respect and ask their opinion.

Life coach my arse. Life coaches tend to be people who have failed careers and are too posh and too lazy to work in Tescos.

Basically, you know when your husband is thinking of changing careers - and you give him your opinion on whats best for him, for you, for the family...

Thats what a life coach does...

Oh.

Well I could do THAT job. I'm too posh to work in Tesco's. Pay me and I'll tell you what you should do.

Well thats it - basically its for people with no family and friends to help them look objectively at their life...

When I first set up my business (back when it were all green fields round 'ere, PH was just a glint in Ted's eye and I didn't waste half my life on the interweb)I was casting around for all sorts of ideas, mentoring etc. I forget how contact was made, but some life coach came to see me and gave me all the spiel about how he could help me, transform my life, grow my business, live happily ever afterwards etc. And for this he wanted about £1500 for six months coaching yikes I decided I didn't want to talk to someone who was effectively a stranger about how often I slept with my wife (and I'm not kidding that that was one of the areas he said he would want to delve into!) so I said go away and don't darken my door again. He got very shirty about it and revealed a dark underside to his character that someone in his role should probably have not revealed. I would tread very carefully over letting people like this into your life unless you know by a referral from close friends or relatives that they are sound.

phew...at least he didn't ask how often I sleep with your wife....

the downside to the friends/relatives doing it idea is that they dont tend to be very honest- even if they mean to be. This is why people who can't sing still end up on X factor and genuinely think they're good, and why people still appear with totally useless business ideas on Dragons Den.

sometimes someone with an outside perspective can be very useful.

prob with recommendation is that I would imagine some people are very easy to life coach (the ones who know anyway but want someone else to reassure them) and some would be a f**king nightmare. So would be very iffy about that too!

An ex-employer of mine is a Life Coach / Public Speaker. He spent an absolute fortune learning these skills under Tony Robbins, who is probably the world's #1 life/success coach. He attended all of his seminars, weekend experiences, etc, did courses in NLP. Easily spent over £100k in 'training'.

He got me free tickets to a weekend seminar of Tony Robbins', it was down in the Docklands arena. There were about 2000 people there, and quite honestly it was easy to get into the swing of things, I even did the firewalk across 10' of hot coals.

But, ultimately, most of the life coaches were somewhat distracted from daily life. They never seemed to have the answer to anything, they mostly just told you that if you *really* wanted to something, you would find a way. Heavy on the inspiration, light on actual help. They also seemed a bit geeky/nerdy, and only seemed to truly relate to other coaches. Everything was always 'excellent' or 'superb' or 'outstanding', these are the phrases that they try to drill into you. They are harmless enough people who will give you lots of motivation (at a price), but don't expect much in the way of answers or help.

seems to me that there are a awful lot of people on here who know f@ck all about things but still construct high handed comments emphasising their 'knowledge'...and you fit right in to that old boy.

A good life coach inspires you and it's often good to bounce ideas off a professional person who can provide constructive criticism and support.

why do you disparage them when it seems painfully obvious from your posturing that you've not had any experience of them?

there's no need to be 'quite' so insulting...is there?

more bollox.

I dare say some of them do this, but more fool you for not going on reputation/recommendation.

have you considered that one may not actually want to talk to someone close to them/with a prior knowledge of their personal circumstances? a fresh outlook on things is sometimes helpful...I wonder if you could benefit from one of those?

Ok didn't post this to actually get so much of everyone elses opinions, but hey that's Forums for you....Those who did post something constructive and worth reading.. thanks, good food for thought.

Think people misunderstand the point, this is not about my personal life, its about development within business and career development, eg mentoring etc. I would not claim to know if this works or not , as have never tried, as per most people on this board..

But hey , we are all different, entitled to our own thoughts and what we do everyday.
