Hi all,

Basically I'm looking at Summer Internships and have a fairly good idea of what I want to do (my father is in the same game). I was just wondering if anyone on here also worked in an Investment Bank. I need to ask a couple of questions about my CV and the application process.

Many thanks

What side of investment banking are you thinking of getting into?

Latest reply everrr (sorry about that forgot about the thread)

My old man is in Credit Risk and he's advised that (I wouldn't get in for Capital Markets). Maybe M&A as well to a lesser extent.

Tbh - I don't know if it's for me. I've always wanted to do it because my father has but thinking about it now it seems to be significantly more rewarding to own and run your own business. I do the bit of occasional ebay selling and I'm going through a business proposition with a friend of mine as it's unlikely I'll secure a Summer Internship.

i was exactly where you are, 5-6 years ago.

i had always been interested in investment banking but actually really wanted to run my own business.

After leaving Uni i worked for Barclays Capital for about 6 months.

A couple of pieces of advice- if you aren't 100% sure that you want to be in investment banking then don't get into it- the stresses imposed by targets as well as the enviroment lead to very high stress - if you aren't 100% sure of yourself then you will crack very quickly.

don't expect to make a carreer out of it- i managed to save enough money from my salary and bonusses that i could start my own business.I have a number of highly intelligent and motivated friends who are very unhappy in the financial world- because they can't get out of the job safely- they are stuck where they are because of mortgages, family, wanting a certain life etc etc (they don't see it that way but they have certain expectations which they are not meeting!). There are actually very few chances for career progression- although if you can progress you can make seriously big money.

Getting into investment banking is a heck of a lot easier if you have done an internship- at least then you will know whether it is right for you.

If you go to interview, expect some pretty intense days- a number of the banks i interviewed for had 4 days of testing!!!! Also be extremely honest about why you want to get into banking- the first couple of interviews i went to i made the mistake of not saying i was interested in money, excitement and power. I did fine after i admitted those to the next few interviewees!

Hi

I would recomend doing more than just a summer internship. Im currently on one in LA in Private Banking, similar but not the same as Investment Banking. I have been here for 3 months and only now am i really getting into the groove of things and actually getting totally involved in projects. Therefore although a summer internship is good, i would recommend something a bit longer. Sacrifice no pay, im not paid all year whilst im here.

Let me know how it goes for you though, investment banking can be exciting if your interested in it.

MC - surely if your Dad is in the industry it is a prime chance to get in to his office, or for him to get you in to another area of investment banking - if only to spend a few days shadowing someone and seeing what it is about?

Personally I love the sector. I can imagine owning your own company is more rewarding on many levels if that is your thing - but it isn't for everyone. If that is the avenue you go down then good luck.

I've done Summer work for the last three years - I'm practically part of the furniture now. I've always been very career minded but all of a sudden I've just become very confused about the whole thing.

Thanks for all your replies thus far.

Theres only one area of investment banking to get into - Trading. They make the big bucks and everyone else is a cost centre.

Doesnt matter what you trade - equities, fixed income, derivatives. get yourself a junior trader role and you'll be set

What do you wanna know? I run the Algorithmic Trading Desk at a sizeable Investment Bank?

Private message me if you want to ask some questions?
