Having decided that my taxis are going to accept credit and debit cards, I've done a search on here and most threads seem to point towards online card acceptance - not a lot of use for a taxi!

Anyway, the business account is with Natwest and they have pointed me towards Streamline (unsurprisingly!). I can rent the mobile terminals for each taxi from them for about £30 plus VAT a month and pay fees of 2.85% on CC's and 34p on DC's. There is a minimum charge of £20 per terminal per month (£700ish spend, not too difficult). I reckon most of my customers would use the facility and from my point of view the money would be straight into my account (okay upto 5 days later I guess). I'm pretty much sold on the idea, but would like to contact another 'supplier' for a comparison - I can play one off againt the other a bit for a better deal perhaps.

Any help gratefully received.

Watch those pay dates.

First year of trading normally results in a 30day wait for the payment.

Also, what happens about cloned cards?

Can you not have a terminal in the office and get the drivers to radio the card details?

But then I suppose there are cardholder present/not present issues there

I did think of that, but would you give you card to a cabbie you had never met, I wouldn't.

I have already spruced up the corporate image with new vehicles and a uniform. I now want to improve the added value products. I straw poll of customers indicates that most would pay by card. This is good for me in two ways a) The money is direct into account (which is electronic and therefore free as opposed to paying in cash for which I am charged per transaction plus 0.9% of the value) b) Less opportunity for my drivers to pocket the odd fare as there is an audit trail.

Is there anyone else apart from Streamline or am I over a barrel?

True, what you could do is implement a web powered solution and have drivers filling in card details to a web page. Effectively building your own terminals.

Doesnt get over the cardholder present/not present issue.

Are you a memeber of the FSB?

They are quite helpful on matters such as this.

I looked into it, but at £200 a year I couldn't see the benefit. If it is going to save me overall, then I might have another look.

£130 odd I think I pay.

Benefits are there though.

Free banking for one plus reductions on all manner of things, their card services are the cheapest I can find...

Tyresmoke, as and when you decide on a cc system ask them if it can be intergrated into your website, ie for quoted jobs ( £30 to Bristol Airport) If it can let me know and we will add it Free of Charge.

Good luck mate.

To my mind the trouble with taxis is(1) the unpredictability of the fare and (2) the big sums sometimes involved combined with an unwillingness to take cards. You seem to be addressing the issues.

You forgot exceptional customer service and that special touch, all of which are found in abundance at that Taxi oasis known as www.parkwaytaxis.com

I've never experianced any problems with streamline (no experience of mobile card processing mind)

I know Barclays do what your after.

If you look halfway down this page too then there is a list of aquiring banks in the UK. If you go around these and play them off against each other then you'll probably get a more rounded idea of the best costs available.

A lot will be based on your history and remember terms will vary just as much, if not more then costs so be mindful of how it'll hit your cashflow.

That on-line booking page goes a bit odd in its layout with firefox.

Nice simple / effect site though. (but you'ld expect that from James)
