I have a 17 year old student inputtinf data for me for 2 or 3 days. She wil earn about £200. Does she or I have to tell the tax man? This is her only income for the year.

She can sign a form saying she is a student working only in the holidays and her income will be less than the threashold, cant remember the name though.

Got it from their web site. Looks like she signs it to say she is working only inthe holidays and earns less than £5035 and I hang on to it for 3 years.

It used to be called a P46(S).

Just get her to sign it and keep it with your payroll files.

She is below the NI threshold. It is a single payment of £160 for odd hours inputting data spread over a 3 or 4 week period. My main concern was for her as I know the HRMC will drop a £100 fine on people who don't declare, even if they are below the PAYE/NI thresholds.

BTW does anyone know how much people on state benefits can earn before it affects them? I seem to recall there is a very small amount (£5 a week or something like that) they are allowed to earn without it impacting on their pension/benefits. I have an old couple who help me stuff envelopes for half a day once a year who to date I have paid out of my own pocket supplemneted with a chinese meal at the end of the day and a bottle of wine. Would be nice to pay them a proper rate through the business.
