how to protect yourself from disciplinary action
Discussion
I am in a situation at the moment at work where i have taken over from someone, and the procedures that he put in place i have been following since the 2nd of january when i took over the position.
But i am now concerned that even though i have been in the job only a few days that the procedures put in place before me do not conform to comapny policy. I have not had the time to review them as i am working for a deadline this week. but i do not want any action agaist me in retrospect due to the clown who worked hear before.
I have looked through the disciplinary guides set out by the company and the chatagory that this falls in is not a good one, i feel somewhat annoyed that i have been put in this posistion and i had to write my own job discription.
I am happy to follow company policy as i am not far from senior managment and it is my aim to tow the line so far to achieve the goal of being a senior manager. I know i have the support of the director of the business unit and my technical director. but i dont want anything like this on my file as my reputation at the company has been perfect ever since i started and thats the way i would want to keep it,
any advice appriciated.
thanks
Steve

Tell your boss. If it's important (it sounds as if it is) then keep a record i.e. if you tell him verbally then back this up with an email or other permanent record.
If it's safe and legal, it would be reasonable imo to carry on with established practice while you clarify the situation. But if you believe this may be contrary to official company policy then you need to make sure this has been reported and your approach has been sanctioned by the company.

Ultimately, correspondence with HR will set a precendence. Inform them that you are dealing with the current deadline according to current procedures but wish to discuss this matter with them at the earliest convenience as you have reservations as to etc. etc.
Do it in writing to cover yourself.
Paper trails are all that matter.
