Grrr.

Just taken a new driver right through the mill of getting his Private Hire Licence. It's taken two driving tests and about £250 of his own money.

He starts on his first day... We explain that we'll give him short local runs so that he can learn the area. He has no experience, but no overheads. We provide a Car, Fuel, Insurance, Sat Nav and all his fares. HE takes 40%. Cash.

He comes out between about 9am and 5pm and earns for himself about £40. Pretty good for a first day on the job!

He quits. And won't listen to any reasoning as to why he's only earnt £40. So he's £200 down the tubes without a job.

Probably not fully aware or committed to the job and would probably have left once he's had a bad day or difficult day. Better now than in 3 weeks time when he has a slow day and is booked in to do an important job where he can't easily be replaced at short notice?

Agreed!

Even if he had his own car and paying out for insurance etc himself me might be lucky to get £40 after these have been paid for at the end of a quiet day.

Better to be rid now than in 2 months time though!

I feel your pain - although yours is a poke in the eye compared to my sledgehammer to the goolies.

We spent over 10k hiring someone in from South Africa (I'm in Dubai) only to have them leave after 6 months - the last month spending 12 days sick with stress - Funny thing is, all the staff we have that have come from within Dubai (90%) and that have worked for other agencies often say that we operate on a different level to all the others ie. International Standards - we look after our staff well, pay them a good salary and take a vested interest in their careers with training etc... (bear in mind that UAE Labour Law is almost all in the favour of the employer and many employees are treated like shit) It's only those that come from abroad, after a while meet other company owners and get lured away as they are sold on the grass is greener.

Funnily enough - they get shafted in the end and if our dear South African friend thinks working for me was stressful than I fear her days in Dubai are numbered.

Ho ho ho. Welcome to the fickle world of taxi companies!!

Wait until you have a 3am airport run and the driver goes out and gets pissed the night before and/or sleeps in.

They may not be the best paid out there, but it's bloody hard to find a good one. I pay all my drivers an hourly rate. That way if they're busy it works well for me and in the quiet spells it's good for them - plus I can get them to clean out their vehicles, etc because they're getting paid anyway.

O/T Rich, do you get Private Hire and Taxi Monthly? Sent to me every month free. Quite a good read to see how other areas are doing/rates charged/new vehicles.

Something I've always wondered. What journeys are the best for taxi firms? Lots of short runs, one big one? I rarely get a taxi home from the station as it's in walking distance, but when i can't be arsed to walk and take a taxi, is the driver smiling on the surface but spitting feathers underneath at my measly £4 fare?

Trooper - six and two threes really. If the taxi driver is paid a percentage of takings then a £4 fare is crap and takes too long - because he's missing the 'big' one isn't he? On the other hand, if you have loads of short journeys the takings can soon rack up. For us a trip to Heathrow/Gatwick is 5 or 6 hours round trip so effectively takes a taxi out of the local work for a day. However, it takes a decent wedge doing the job.

If you're busy locally (Saturday night) then loads of short ones are good. If you are having a quiet, wet Wednesday in January then you want 3 or 4 Heathrow jobs.

Your man has sat there doing nothing for two hours and is hoping for a £30 fare and what happens? You turn up and he gets £4. His mate behind him gets a £30 fare with a wait and return!!

My drivers are paid hourly, so it makes no odds to them if it's near or far, they're always smiling.

I would say that is possibly a good plan as this will attract the most risk adverse type of employee - and those tend to be the ones who stay in their job in their comfort zone for a long time!

It also allows you to schedule rotas around the busy times. Clever!

Local Authority states that a new driver HAS to work for a firm for at least a year.
