... how do I get my personal website to appear in Google etc. search listings, unless I pay for the privilege? I've tried doing the 'keywords in the header' bit, but no luck on Google, Yahoo, AskJeeves, that other one and Wankadoo.
It's just a compilation of TVR-related bits, I just thought it might help a bit on the international Wedge-fixing scale of things.

In my opinion, Google is the one worth trying for. 2 things help:
1. Get listed in the appropriate category in DMOZ - www.dmoz.org
2. Get as many people as possible to link to you.

Having meta tags can't hurt, but most search engines these days ignore them as they have been abused by spammers and people trying to bump up their rankings artificially with unrelated words stuffed into them.

This is the key. Google's ratings work by links. The more links a site has to it the higher up the results it will be. Also, the higher up the table a site that links to you is, the more points it gets you.

Have you manually submitted the URL. Some other stuff here

www.google.co.uk/intl/en/webmasters/index.html

links are the important to moving up the ranking but you need to be indexed first. According to google you will be listed 6 to 8 weeks after you get listed in DMOZ if submitting straight to google didn't work
