Sounds like a spyware/adware or virus infection to me. Try AdAware and Spybot and also do a full virus scan with and up to date checker.
All these checks are best done in safe mode (press F8 at boot before the Windows splash screen appears.)
Oh and when you have done all that, as the previous poster says, go here and get Firefox and ditch IE6 for good. You will be doing yourself a BIG favour.

Well if you did as we adviced and downloaded firefox as a replacement for IE6 you could tell, problem goes away it's IE6 if not ....XP
Are you running SP2 on XP .. if not download it
Are you running anti-virus software if not go to http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/ and download the free version of avg 7

Hi, this is just an update
- downloaded Firefox but was still hanging while surfing
- checked the modem drivers and mine were the most current
- downloaded AVG 7 and found some Trojan viruses. These were duely quarantined.
- applied SP2, as soon as this was applied the machine stayed on line for over an hour with no problems
Now running Firefox and everything is running sweet. Thanks for the advice.
