Common then, if I may be so bold.... IT Contractor rates:

Job or Skill-Set/Rate vs:

http://www.contractoruk.com/market_stats/

ABAP/SAP looks like they're prety hot this month...

All in the interest of knowing what I should be asking for or course... ;)

What for? Burger flipping?

I wouldn't scratch my arse for £24ph.

I'll tell you what though - some of those day rates don't look so bad. £485pd for C++ - I could work with that.

Actually, there does seem to be a marked difference between day and hour rates. Even if you assume you have to work 10 hours to get a day done, that's still £40.70ph (equivalent) compared with £24.

I wonder if the results are being skewed by the banks and financial institutions who tradionally pay well but on a day rate?

It is worrying that you associate those two ideas

Rates have gone down the toilet in recent years for ordinary support dweebs. I've seen as low as £13/hr for PC Support people.

OTOH, if you've a good niche skill; security, databases, Linux, then the sky's the limit. I have a friend who is the world authority on a financial system (he helped to write it) who's presently on a 6 month contract in New York, free tickets, free accommodation, £1000/day.

I'm giving serious thought to going back to contracting (I'm a Unix security geek) 'cos I ain't getting a career at my age and permie rates don't cut it any more after years of 1% and 2% pay rises.

Yep, in the good old days I guess 700-750 was a good mark.

I reckon I might scratch my arse for 500-600 now adays.

SAP stuff is picking up again but real world rates have been hovering between £350 & £500 per day for ages. Unless you are a very good ABAPer you are likely to be on a bit less that the decent functional guys & people with BW or Netweaver skills. Whilst rates seem to be OK the number of jobs is a bit less as much of the technical stuff has been hived out to India. It seems companies are realising slowly that if they want it to be done properly then outsourcing he code can be more expensive than doing it here.

And all I can say in response is "thank for that" - it's about time.

I think it really depends what you do, and what level you do it at, and what sector you are in.

I get the impression, for example, that things like SAP are well paid right now.

Generally rates are coming back up, and this goes hand in hand with more work being available.

Basic support roles are still much lower than they were, which is a good thing as they were far too high before, and it gave us all a bad name.

In my field, which is IP networking, I'd say it goes from about 200/day for a network support person with a reasonable all round skill set (say ccna - ccnp level) up to around 5-600/day for a top guy with lots of design and major implementation experience (CCIE and above), but to be honest the top money would be exceptional, around 400/day is pretty good, and 350/ day is common even for a high skill set.

Having looked at that again.

How are they going from an hourly of £25 to a daily of £400?

16 hour days??

you should have seen soem of the timesheets I used to shove in

that was in the good old days (late 90's) when I was on £60 ph. I had been told to bill at least 9 hours per day.

Hard life that
