Guys

How (if at all) can I password-protect a file?

In this case, it's an MPEG I'd like to protect.

Do you need it password protected from a) someone logging onto your machine as yourself, or from b) someone logging on to your machine as someone else, or c) something else entirely?

'a' is trickier with an mpeg - best bet might be to create a password protected zip file and stick it in there. Or use an encryption utility, but then you might get the third degree about why you need an encryption program installed and what have you got to hide Depends on the circumstances really. Or go for the security through obsurity route and just move it somewhere noone would thing of looking for it, and rename it to something inoccuous i.e. not an mpeg. Then remember to clear your recently used files list after you open it.

'b' - in XP, right click, properties, encrypt.

Ok, I'll demonstrate my ignorance here by asking how to create a zip file, then put a password on it.....

OK... Download and install Winzip onto your PC!

WHen you run Winzip, use Winzip Classic rather than the wizard (I hate wizards!)

Click "New"

Give your new archive file (zip file) a name, and decide where you are going to save the file - all in the usual way.

Click "Add"

Then select all of the files that you want to put into your archive (zip) file.

Once you have added these files, they will appear in a list in your archive.

Click "Encrypt"

Enter and re-enter a password

Click "File" and "Close Archive"

You now have a Zip file on your PC, that contains your Mpegs (or whatever) that can only be opened using the correct password that you have just created.
