Hi Folks. I wasn't sure whether this should go in photography or computing, but I'll start here...

1) Is there a way to tag iPhone photos in Apple photos so that they can appear in multiple "Phantom" albums? e.g. I'd like all of my photos from one motoring event searchable, but also all photos of all Lamborghinis searchable. I've tried captions, but they don't appear to return in searches. Or should I cut my losses and sync my Apple photos to a proper librarianship app?

2) What is the best non-Instagram platform for sharing photos online these days? I'm after something that I can browse my likes, and others can follow my photos (should anybody want to, of course! biggrin)

3) If the solution to both of the above can be had in a single app, so be it. I'm also happy to pay a small monthly cost.

Things crossing my mind that could fit one or both requirements: Lightroom, 500px, Flickr, Pixelfed...

...over to you please, experienced PH masses! smile

GooglePhotos is very clever and if I search "audi" in my whole photo DB then it pulls through all manner of Audis I have owned (no other marques) but also my daughters electric ride-on TT that she had as a toddler so it does seem clever enough to recognise what is what (note that all the pics are already contained in albums but not related to "audi" naming convention)

You can share photos from GooglePhotos but following I have no idea about, sorry! and im not an IG'er so have no idea about the other aspect! smile

I *think* Flikr ticks those boxes. I'm not absolutely certain, because I ducked out of it when it became a subscription service.

Thanks Folks.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that I try to avoid Google.

Flickr was also on my mind; does it also have the "social" aspect then? I've never dived in too deeply.

I seem to remember that I had 6 followers, and I followed 12. Don't know if comments etc. are part of it.

It may still be free to open an account with very limited storage - perhaps you could do a trial account to play with?

I'm not a lot of help really, am I!

hehe All inputs gratefully received!

I think I may set up and play with either Flickr or Smugmug and Pixelfed. 500px looks like it’s gone downhill somewhat since being purchased a few years ago.

If you want to share photos online, then you may need to use whatever your audience is using.

When I needed to share a number of pictures with a few people, I threw them into a Wix website created for the purpose.
Other stuff I've posted on Facebook groups.

What exactly do you want, and how much are you happy to pay?

And do you wish to keep control, copyright etc?

Indeed, good questions that help to hone the scope.

Meta/Google: no.

Copyright: probably Creative Commons with a watermark applied. Ultimate ownership remains with me.

Sharing: generally with anybody who may like what I snap.

Organisation: what I have termed as tagging so that multiple searches can turn up the same photo in each search (see motoring example in opening post).

Perhaps I’ll need Flickr/Smugmug for organisarion and PixelFed for sharing? I’m not averse to the right tool for each job, if one tool won’t do both well.

I've fallen out of the loop on this, and have never taken to any of the big social media platforms.

As a result of ignoring social media I'd not heard of Pixelfed before until it being mentioned in this thread.

I just did some brief reading on Pixelfed, and the number of signed up members seem small. No idea on the number of users who are actually active though.

How and who do you want to share the photos with, and for what reason, or what is it you want to achieve?

Will you expect users to sign up to a new platform to follow you?
If the number of active users and followers is ultimately very low will it sustain your interest having a low number of views/followers/feedback?

With regards to phone albums, iPhone albums are effectively tags, they do not remove the photos from the main photo stream, so photos can appear in multiple albums. Use iCloud.com to organise them more easily on a computer.

I'm going to be very unhelpful here, as my own thoughts have been evolving over the last few days as I've read more about current available options.

I think that I'm after an Instgram-style way to share things with like-minded people, but also see the challenge that most services these days require a sign-up to browse. I think even Flickr does now, and I'm reasonably confident it didn't ~7-8 years ago. I can say 'm not just looking for a family-and-friends style sharing, but a wider populous.

Ah, that is good to know! Thank you!
