Numbered list in Word

Probably missing something obvious here. Preparing a Word doc that I want to look like this with numbered lists

Sub heading
Point 1
Point 2

Sub heading
Point 3
Point 4

Just need to insert the sub headings without breaking the sequence of the numbers. I can get this far

Sub heading
Point 1
Point 2

Sub heading
Point 1
Point 2

But that's no good. If I say please refer to point 2 the question is which point 2.

The doc is going to run to ~30 pages in that format it's Sunday afternoon and it's due 1st thing tomorrow morning.

Any clues would be a lifesaver.

Right-click bullet point #3 and turn off Restart Numbering

Right-click on the point you want to renumber and choose Continue Numbering.
