POE Wifi Extender / Access Point
Discussion
Hi all - I have that dangerous thing of being ever so slightly knowledgeable, but not knowledgeable to actually know if im correct or not.
I want to extend the reach of our Wifi down to the Garage/Garden. And I want to do it cheaply.
Router is at far side of house, plugs into a combined DVR and network switch. Ethernet runs to all the CCTV cameras around the house.
There is a long Ethernet extension that runs all the way down to the garage, with another simple switch where it splits and some more cameras are plugged in.
This leaves me, I think, a really easy option of plugging in a POE Access point, which if I setup with the same details as the router, effectively 'extends' my wifi down at this end of the property where I want it.
Am I correct? Will wireless items seamlessly switch from connecting to one piece of hardware to the other as you move around the property?
Self explanatory but blue is my fibre in, red is my existing network, cameras are all POE and work great. Quesiton Mark is where I want to install the new kit, again, POE so I simply just connect it via a short patch cable and screw it to the wall next to the (powered) switch.
This looks to do the trick - I'll be mounting in a garage, so not 'outside' but I think its probably best due to potential humid or cold temps.

Yes, you're adding an wireless access point to your existing cabled network. I have this and it's fine, the only slight annoyance is sometimes my phone will hang on to the lesser signal. So if I am in the garage, it uses that WAP, I go inside and rather than jump to the house WAP, its stays on the garage one and can be slow.
You can turn the signal strength down to combat this, but then you get a dead spot between the 2. I find just turning wifi off and back on makes it find the stronger connection.
I recommend the EAP110 too, same as what I have. It's on the ceiling of my garage, rather than outside. You just setup the new device to have the same wifi name and security as the existing one and it's (fairly) seamless.

I have a mesh node in my garage and shed at the end of the garden, both hard connected back to the house via ethernet cables. Means it's all the same wifi access point so i have no issues about devices holding on to a weaker wifi. Works seamlessly.
Note that simply naming a second wifi the same as the first does not make them a mesh, they are still separate wifi and you're devices will know that.
