Is there a GoPro expert in the house?
Discussion
Good morning all,
As per my current thread in the Audi, Seat, Skoda & VW section on Pistonheads, my Skoda Kamiq TSI 1.5 manual keeps cutting out whilst driving.
The Skoda dealer says there is nothing wrong with the car (it's under warranty).
So in order to prove our point I have just bought a GoPro Hero12 Black to try to record the dashboard next time the fault occurs.
I am the least savvy tech person that I have ever come across so I was wondering whether a GoPro expert could advise as to the correct settings to use ?
Many thanks in advance and apologies for my ignorance !

Go Pros are pretty straightforward to use ‘out of the box’. From memory, there is a big red button on the top, that’s a quick start button.
It’ll just fire up and start recording, until you press it again and then it’ll turn off.
Assume that’s what you are wanting? You’ll have to position it somewhere in the car to be able to see the dash though which might not be easy.
Point to note is that my Go Pro has a tendency to overheat and switch off after about 45 mins of continual recording. It might be just mine though.
Alternative would be a dashcam of some kind as they are built for this kind of long and continuous recording.
Good luck with it, hope they find the problem with the car.

as mentioned above, the actual settings are not really much of an issue if all you need is a shot of the dash/ instrument cluster.
Depending on how long you are going to need to record/ film, I’d suggest going into the menu’s and only recording in 1080/ HD quality. if you record in 4k or the highest (5.3k i think?) then you’ll create massive video files that are harder to transfer/ save, and the cameras can overheat if left in a static environment/no airflow
but Id recommend the ‘Quik’ app, gopros own video editing app, it’s not brilliant, but can do fairly basic stuff easily/ quickly, and saves videos to the phone for playback/ emailing to the garage.
If I needed to do what your doing i’d:
- get a suction mount to stick camera to window- pointing towards dash board. or use a basic clip mount to the seat belt/ my jacket- pointing at the dash
- use basic video settings (1080/ HD quality)
- have a few practises to make sure you can see what you want on the dash.
- download/ save/ edit via the quik app on a mobile/ tablet
if you’ve any specific questions, fire away!
