I was being charged 140 a month for sky tv and broadband, no special package as such, Netflix premium, ad skipping and multi room.

When I phoned them the best deal they would offer was still about 15 or so more than being a new customer so in a fit of controlled rage I cancelled hehe

Not so funny now, I am totally unable to register as a new customer and neither is my wife. I guess they have our address. I also assume I can't be a new customer until they receive all their stuff back.

so in a few days we have no internet and everything is fking internet now....

Anyway, I dont really watch tv but I do like the user interface. The broadband (fibre) also works very well, I can't complain.

Speaking to a few mates they were gobsmacked we paid for tv and I guess they were right, I have managed to get my wife to finally consider not having sky as well (we haven't got much choice at the minute).

So what are people recommending and what are people paying? do I just use Samsung tv plus and then the array of apps on there? and just have whatever as broadband. I see some come with things like sky cinema anyway (not that we had that).

500mb is what we had and was spot on. I have had a look about and tbh they all look quite expensive hence why I just thought id go to sky as a new customer. maybe I still will.

My broadband is with VM, some good deals to be had as a new customer - although I believe their customer service is shocking when it comes time to cancel. Not had that experience myself though (yet!).

I also have an Apple TV 4K and just subscribe to whatever apps I want as and when; I know fire sticks are cheaper but I find them painfully slow and not worth the price.

Edit: I pay £32 for M350 broadband.

Do you really need 500mbs?
We are a family of 3 and have 3 tv,s running netfix etc and all have smart phones and laptops, 30mbs works fine for us, never had a problem, not sure how much we pay but its around £20 a month.
We arent heavy games tho.
I recently discovered my elderly mum was paying bt for their fastest fiber internet that was available in her area, changed supplier to a cheaper slower internet. Saving her almost £100 a month.
She cant tell the difference.
Worth looking at how much you actually use, ive found some vastly overestimate how much they need.

Vodafone on city fibre £23 a month for 910gb. Run a Roku instead of TiVo and get all the usual channels. Do like the River Monsters channel lol.

I went PlusNet for by fibre line when my renewal came through about 6-8mths ago - 1gb connection, £31.99/mth works perfectly fine for my needs.

In terms of the TV I did the same and did without Sky for a while but using streaming services only really riles me, constantly switching between a plethora of apps, its not fun and I found that 90% of the time was just spent looking for something/anything.

Personally, I would speak to Sky again about dropping down to their Stream Ultimate package (that also includes basic Netflix / Disney+ / Paramount+ / HayU etc.) and will only be £24/mth (and thats assuming they give you nothing for loyalty - I have this package plus SkyCinema for a total of £28/mth)

Connection - Although marketing is constantly banging on about the connection speed, there are a couple of other factors which are key (Latency and contention ratio). TL;DR - 100Mbps is probably enough... Especially if you're on fibre.

Apps - Get an AppleTV and don't bother with the built in apps on your TV... They're crap. Other things like the firesticks, generate a lot of background 'noise' on the network, downloading adverts, reporting stats, etc.

If you want to keep it simple, here's my shopping list for you:

  • BT 150Mb fibre.
  • AppleTV
  • Subscriptions to whatever you want.

thanks guys for the help. I may go plusnet.

although sky is causing me hell. they are lying vile scum and tbh I dont really know what to do next.

I cancelled it all last week. I then find out because I have cancelled it I can't just switch to another provider using what they call one touch switch.

So I call sky this morning only to be told 'no you haven't cancelled it'

wtf, so I am unable to switch to another provider, sky say they are still going to take the payments, I go into one and eventually get through to a British customer services (bless those Indian guys I actually feel sorry for them). this British bloke says he can see it was cancelled last week but its been reinstated!

so if its been reinstated why can't I switch provider and why has sky sent me a plethora of emails saying sorry to see me leave and then sent e all the packaging to send the boxes etc back.....

All he said was he will look into it and call me back at 7pm tonight, it's now 5 to 7......I said I didn't trust he would call back and he was very convincing.

It's causing me massive fking stress tbh, all over tv and fking broadband. I made it clear I couldn't afford 140 a month, I made it clear that I was happy to stay last week but only if I got the same deal as new customers, they refused.

If he calls shortly then great, if not what the hell do I do? they are lying to me and have put some kind of block on this address so we can't switch, if I stop the direct debit im under the impression thats the same as not paying a finance agreement (I am out of contract btw)

disgusting service tbh.

Virginmedia is a nightmare, ‘you can check out anytime you like but you can never leave…’

That sky experience actually sounds worse. Be careful who you end up with..

they have called he's on the phone now, tbh I am losing my st over this, they can't do anything because of a 'technical issue' which is what I was told last week.

They are basically not letting me leave. I am losing my st here. over sky fking tv and broadband.

I guess next step is ombudsman of some sort?

If any normal business behaved like this there would be no business. I reckon I have spent around 2.5 hours at least on the phone to these fking dheads now and am in a worse position than when it started.

Three 5g is mentioned above, which might be an option for you. Cheap as chips for unlimited data - we pay £16/month.

Our speed averages around 40mb/s which is plenty.

The reason I mention is because it is totally free of the bit of wire coming in to your house, so no need for Sky to play ball with you. NOte that coverage will vary from place to place. You might have none, or you might have a great signal and very good speeds.

well apparently I am in a 5g area, my phone (ee) says we are on 5g and says coverage is good.

But it just doesn't really work. I will look into it though.

Whats amazing here is at the same time this weekend I dropped my phone and a bank card expired.

Long and short was:

I was unable to use my new card online. I had to call the bank but as it was on my wife's phone who's with the same bank and its all a.i I couldn't get through to validate the card.

because I was calling sky on wife's phone that in itself was a problem, it took some time for them to realise I wasnt her.couple that with Skys issues and the fact that in this house now the following is reliant or to some extent reliant on broadband and a smartphone I can see how easily you can be locked out the system if it doesn't all align.

Such conscious disassociation with these things. Would you go steal a car? If not, then why would you steal content? Makes no sense to me. Plus of someone has kids then your literally teaching them stealing is acceptable.

I hear of some regularly paying £200 a month for Sky and to me that's ludicrous.
I got rid of it over 10 years ago and you just get used to not having it.
My Mother moved over to EE a while back but that has not been a pleasant experience.
I have stuck with plusnet for fibre and they have been very reliable really, the contracted installers of the fibre stuff were useless though.

Internet - 5G - totally flexible, moving house is a cinch, £20 a month and anywhere from 160/70 to 900/120 (new house, old house). Unlimited. Ping isn't fab for gaming, but its ok.

TV - we just have freesat now (new house came with dish). Previously Freeview - but freesat is way better in terms of quality and number of HD channels. I don't watch TV - Mrs does. I watch Youtube mostly.

The life expectancy of Freesat is shorter than Freeview,it could be off air as early as 2030 as that's when the satellites reach the end of life
