My ancient Chromebook has finally died , now do i get a laptop , MacBook pro or another Chromebook ?

Budget is £200 so looking at dell lattitudes , thinkpads , Microsoft surface all i5 8gb 256mb or hp elite book which is i7.

Chromebook all seem to be ryzen 5 or i7 , 8-16gb and 128mb

Or possibly push the budget and get 2019 MacBook pro with i7 ,16gb , 512mb.

It will be used for watching YouTube, general consumption , not for sny work use or video editing etc.

If that's all you're doing get an iPad. £259 on the refurb store for a 9th gen, cheap bluetooth keyboard for Mac £20. Easy to lug around, will be supported for years.

Purely for consumption I'm a big fan of the iPad.

but £200 is nothing with memory and storage prices this high. You would be looking at refurb laptops for sure.

For a Windows laptop you want 16GB despite what Microsoft claim - Windows will run on 4GB but you will struggle to open a browser tab. 512GB is better than 256. And make sure it has TPM2.0.

A Dell Latitude 5400 sort of thing on Amazon should be fine

The only advice I can give other than buy an iPad, is don't buy the i7 MacBook Pro. It's unsupported as of the next release of osx and legacy apps likely won't be updated either. It was the last of the Intel Macs and was probably the worst product they made in years.

Thanks for the advice.

Looks like either a ipad or go for another Chromebook ( previous one has done everything i needed)

Re ipads what's the least memory you'd go for also given a choice of older model with more memory or newer models less memory which would you pick?

The lowest spec I can see on https://www.apple.com/ is 9th Gen with 64GB for £259 but you can get 256GB for that on Amazon. For comparison my 5th Gen iPad with 32GB is still working, but I only store e-books locally, not music or photos.

I can't speak for Chromebooks, it's a niche I've never really understood.

I'd buy it used so £199 for 256gb.

I could go older but don't get the security updates.
