How do I host pictures?

I have a basic company web site and I want to use some of the space to host my pictures. How do I do it? I don't want the pictures to be seen from the main site.

Create another folder in thr root directory of the website and stick them in there.

Tuffer, it will not let me create a new folder in the root directory - permission denied - I have put the picture in (as FTP sees it)

/tmp/griffith.jpg

but I cannot get there from the address bar.
