Hi, i have a E-Class W210 model and for the past couple of days the ASR, BAS and ABS lights have been coming on (and remain on) from start-up.
What could be causing this?
Any help before getting ripped off from my Merc dealer would be v.appreciated. Thanks.

I had similar symptoms, although they would clear after a few minutes of driving if I stopped and restarted at that point. Turned out to be a sticking brake calliper, which the garage freed off (took them a few hours though).

Nice cerbera by the way!

Thanks Brett, problem hasn't remedied itself yet. I've tried the start-up option as well as giving her a good blast, but it's still happening..
(ps. Chim's a Beauty too!)

Its a well known merc problem (my car some times does it) its reputed to be the pedal brake light switch requires replacing, or a clean up of each of the wheel ABS sensors is required, or the third and easiest option to try is to turn the steering wheel lock to lock three times after starting the car (note: windows may need resetting afterwards).

Damn! Replaced the Brake Light Switch, but with no luck.
What would be the next best thing to investigate before giving it into a workshop?
If required would a diagnostic test show up the fault?
Thanks all.

My Merc dealer has hooked the car to the diagnostic kit for free whenever I have had a problem, and printed off the fault log for me.

You could take it in and ask them to do the same for you, then get a quote. If it is too much, then you are armed with the info for a specialist ...

Hi James, try disconnecting the battery for a minute or so, make sure you
have the radio code though.

Mark.

Still under warranty? Take it to the dealer. If not, get someone to change the brake light switch ...

the problem is solved by replacing the brake light switch

Could be many things, brake switch, as mentioned, ABS pump, maybe the module or a number of sensors. If the brake switch hasn't fixed it, get Merc to hook it up and have a read of the codes.

the brake light switch has always been the favorite, but I read on an American forum about cleaning of the four wheel speed sensors, starting with the front left which is the reference one. Cleaning these sensors is also suppose to help if your speedo needle is erratic or jumpy.

Bugger still no luck! I'd changed the Brake Switch light twice just to make sure it wasn't that (lights still on!). Now a mechanic has told me that the 'ABS Pump' needs replacing as the ASR+BAS and ABS lights go off when this is disconnected.
Does anyone have an idea of the costs and whether replacing it is the only way?
Thanks again all.

you need to run it through a short test on mb lap top if it is the abs pump/control unit which i doubt (I HAVE NEVER CHANGED ONE FOR THAT REASON) it is expensive budget on £700 -900.by the way a dealer should charge u approx £30 for a short test which reads the fault codes stored, further diag may be required if it does not tell you the problem straight away.

I had this on a 99 SLK a while ago and it turned out to be the RHS front ABS sensor was reported as failed. I took it to my independent mechanic and they plugged some laptop in and it came up with the fault straight away.
The part was swapped and it has been fine since.
