Service reset 2005 E class CDI

Loads of web sites are giving the sequence for resetting the 'next service' and service light, none of them work and some seem quite bizarre (like simply disconnecting the battery). Most fail because they instrcut you to have the 'next service interval' on the display when switching on/off and pressing the reset when it reverts to the temp gauge as soon as you switch on/off, so you always have to scrol up through the menu.

Anyone know if some secret sequence of button pushing and ignition key positions work?
